GARBAGE CAN.

HHHHIIIIIII' IIl! lllllllllll (g4/we wie@ GARBAGE-CAN.
Application filed April 27, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM A. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garbage cans, my object being to provide an article of this class which shall be convenient for emptying and which shall be of such character that it will be impossible to accidentally leave the can open or the lid raised.
My improved can is adapted for general use in cities where garbage wagons make regular trips, the garbage man emptying the cans into his wagon and returning the cans to their position on the property where they belong. It frequently happens that the covers are left off cans of this character'. Furthermore, these covers frequently become lost, with the result that the contents of the cans are sometimes exposed for considerable length of time, producing an exceedingly unsanitary condition.
My improvement is intended to overcome these difficulties and to this end, my improved can is so constructed that the bail when lowered fits the body of kthe can closely', but is of such construction that when raised, the can maybe carried thereby Vin the usual manner. However, as soon asthe can is tilted for emptying purposes, the cover is automatically opened by the action of the cam members with which the bail or handle is provided, on projections which extend laterally on opposite sides of the cover. As soon, however, as the can is vallowed to assume the upright position, which it will do as soon as the hand of the user is removed from the handle near the bottom, the bail will automatically act to return the cover to the closed position.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the lSame in detail, reference being made to the Specification of Letters Patent.

accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved garbage'can. is a central vertical section therethrough, cutting the can in both front and rear. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the can when in the tilted position or in the position for discharging its contents. Y
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the body of the can, whose rear upper portion is provided with a bevel 6, being an inclined wall portion which extends from a point 7 upwardly and forwardly to a point 8. The cover 19. of the can extends forwardly from this point and ishinged as shown at 9. This hinge is preferably formed from a piece of wire which extends around the upper edge of the can, being bent upwardly at the rear as shown at 10, and extends transversely across the top of the can approximately at the angle formed by the inclined part 6 and the cover 12. This wire where it extends around the top of the can forward of the hinge, is held in place by bendingthe metal of the can downwardly around the wire, forming a bead 13. The hinge members 141 which encircle the hinge pin 9, are secured to the top or lid 12 on the underside, as shown at 16. rIhe outer portion of the lid is turned downwardly to form a flange 15,
`which preferably extends some distance bevond the `bead 13 outwardly, to compensate for possible irregularities due to imperfec tions in the contour of the upper edge vvof the can. By virtue of this arrangement, there is practically no chance for interference with the closing of the lid when the can is in the upright position.
The lid 12 is provided with a metal strip 17 which extends thereacross and projects therefrom on opposite sides as shown at 1S, whereby these projections are in the path of cam members 19 with which the bail is provided, when the can is tilted to the position shown in Fig. 3. The forward edge of these projections 18 occupy positions approximately in the same vertical plane with the axis of the bail. This condition, however, may vary to some extent. As illustrated in the drawing, the bail is hinged to the opposite sides of the body of the can as shown Fig. 2
at 20, the extremities of the bail being formed into hooks and passed through openings 21 formed in offset ears 22 having parts 23 which are secured to the body of the can by rivets or other suitable fastening devices 24. Vhen the bail is in the upright position or in the position for carrying the can, it has parts 2 5 which are vertically disposed on opposite sides. These parts 25 extend from the hinge hooks to points 26, from which points the cam members 19 extend upwardly and forwardly to points 27, where the sides of the bail again are bent and extend upwardly in vertical parts 28 to points 29, where the sides of the bail are bent rearwardly, approximately at right angles, merging into a hand piece 30.
By reference to Fig.,2, it will be understood that when the bail is raised from the position shown in Fig. l to that shown in Fig. 2, the can may be carried by grasping the handpiece 30. Now, if it is desired to dump the can, the user will grasp the hand piece 30 with one hand and a handle 31 with the other hand. Then, as he raises the can by lifting on the handle 31, the can will tilt forwardly and the cam members 19 of the bail will act upon the projections 1S of the cover to open the same automatically, in which event the can will assume the position shown in Fig. 3, whereby its contents may be discharged. Then, as the handle 31 is released, the other hand of the user still grasping the hand piece 30, the can will assume the position shown in Fig. 2. Then, as the bail is released, it will fall to the position shown in Fig. 1. rIhe handle member 30, it will be noted, is curved to conform approximately to the curve of the exterior surface of the can.
From the foregoing description, the use and operation of my improved garbage can will be readily understood and need not be described further in detail.
Attention is called to the fact that the forward edges of the projections 18 are bent upwardly to form bearing surfaces for the bail as the latter is employed to perform the lid-opening function. These inclined surfaces coperate with the cam members of the bail, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is,- 1. A garbage can having a hinged bail and a hinged lid provided with a part projecting laterally beyond the body of the can and lying in a vertical plane passed through the axis of the bail and in the path of the latter to open the lid as the can is tilted for dumping purposes.
2. A garbage can having a hinged lid provided with parts projecting laterally beyond the lid on opposite sides, and a hinged bail having side members vertically disposed when the bail is in the upright or can-carrying position, said vertically disposed members being bent betwen their extremities to form cam parts adapted to engage said projections in the lid-opening relation as the bail is swung over the top of the can or when the latter is forwardly tilted for dumping purposes.
3. A can having the rear upper portion of its wall inclined and a lid hinged thereto at the forward termination of the said inclined wall'portion, said lid being provided with lateral proj eotions and a hinged bail having vertically disposed side members adapted to engage said projections as the can is tilted for dumping purposes.
t. A can having the rear upper portion of its wall inclined and a lid hinged thereto at the forward termination of the said in clined wall portion, the said hinge being located above the upper surface of the lid, the latter being provided with lateral projections and a hinged bail having vertically disposed side members adapted to engage said projections in the lid opening relation as the can is tilted for dumping purposes.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. GIBSON.
