UNITED STATES CHRISTOPHER. \VHITNEY, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLINVILLE, NEYV YORK.
COAL-SCUTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,619, dated September 15, 1891.
Application filed May 15, 1891.
To all whont itnwy concern:
Be itkuown that I, CHRISTOPHER WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklinville, in the county of (Jattaraugus and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Scuttles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in coal-hods of that classin which a hood is employed to prevent the coal from being spilled from the sides of the hod while being poured from the mouth thereof; and it has for its object to provide ahod of the character stated embodying an exceedingly cheap, simple, and durableconstruction, comprisingbutthree elements which, while thoroughly adapted to perform the function stated, will not-interfere in any manner with the filling of the hod.
My improvements afford a hood for a coalhod, which is of such a form and is so arranged with respect to the hod and the bail thereof as toclose the 110d from the bail to the mouth of said hod while the hod is being carried, but which will be swung back and will wall in the rear portion of the hod when the bail is swung down upon the back thereof, as is commonly done in pouring coal from the mouth of the hod. Furthermore, it will be understood that my improvements provide a hood which is applicable to hods having either straight or bulging side Walls.
My invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hod, the. bail being illustrated in an upright position and the hood covering the hod from the bail to the mouth thereof. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section illustrating the bail tilted rearwardly and the hood in its corresponding position.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates a hod, which maybe of any approved form such as at present in. use, and B indi- Serial No, 392.878. (N0 model.)
cates an ordinary pivotally mounted bail, which maybe provided with a suitable handgrasp, as illustrated.
0 indicates my improved coal-hod hood, which is preferably formed f rom a single piece of metal, is tapering in width, and of a length corresponding to the distance between the bail. This hood 0, which is of a form sub stantially as shown and is adapted to cover the hod from the mouth thereof to the pivotal point of the bail when said bail is upright and to lap over the sides of the hod, has its rear open end of a height corresponding to the distance between the rear end of the hod and the pivotal point of the bail, whereby it back, as is commonly done when pouring coal from the hod, the hood will cover the rear portion of the hod and prevent the coal from spilling over the sides thereof. The connection between the bail and the hood is effected by metal loops or eyes D, which have their ends connected to the sides of the hood at the rear end thereof and embrace the bail, as better illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
By the construction described it will be seen that the hod maybe filled while the bail is in an upright or horizontal position, and that the coal may be readily poured from the mouth of the hod without any interference from the improved hood described.
It will further be seen that by the employment of my improved hood the capacity of the hod is increasedthat is to say, the hod is adapted to carry more coal without the same spilling over the'sides thereof.
claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a coal-hod and the bail pivotally connected to said hod, of a hood formed from a single piece of metal tapering in width and of a length corresponding to the distance between the mouth of the hod and the pivotal point of the bail, said hood having its rear open end of a height corresponding to the distance between the rear end of the hodand the pivotal point of the mouth of the hod and the pivotal point of thewill be seen that when said bail is swung Having described my invention, What I I bail, and a suitable means for attaching the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in rear end of the hood to the bail, whereby when presence of two witnesses. the bail is upright the hood Will close the front portion of the hod and when said bail CHRISTOPHER WHITNEY. is horizontal the said hood will well up the rear portion of the hod and leave the mouth thereof entirely unobstructed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
