HOD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,321, dated July 29, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, ANDREW G. BRANDT and GEORGE D. BRANDT, citizens of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hod, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in hods.

The object of the present invention is to increase the lightness and durability of beds, lessen their cost of construction, and enable the handle to be readily removedin order that a 110d may occupy a small space when not in use.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hod constructed in accordance with the invention, showing a trowel held in place. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is arear elevation. Fig. 4 is atransverse sectional view.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates a box designed to receive mortar and brick and constructed of sheet metal, preferably sheet-steel when brick is designed to be carried, and some lighter metal when the hod is to be used for carrying mortar. The box A is constructed of a sheet-metal blank and bent into the ordinary form, the extreme bottom or apex a of the side a being curved or rounded in order to rest easily upon the shoulder and to avoid the necessity of employing the usual pad for that purpose. End pieces a are cut and bent upon each other and have their ad j accnt edges soldered, riveted, or similarly secured together to form the back of the hod, and their upper edges are bent over and provided with a slot a which is designed to receive the blade of a trowel, to provide a place for conveniently carrying the latter. The box A has the upper edges of its sides slightly rolled, in order to present an ornamental appearance and to prevent any sharp edges coming in contact with the users hand.

A handle B is bolted to the sides of the box A, but it may, if desired, be riveted or otherwise secured thereto; but it is preferable to attach the handle by bolts 0 in order that the box and handle may readily be separated when not in use, so that they'can be made to occupy but small space, which is very desirable in shipping. The handle B is constructed of sheet metal and rolled or bent in tubular form, and has its upper end split and spread into forked arms I), which are perforated and bolted to the sides of the box. The handle may, instead of being constructed of a piece of sheet metal, be made of a tube and secured to the box, as above described.

Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. A hod-box constructed of sheet metal, and having the upper edge of the back bent upon itself and provided with a slot adapted for the reception of the blade of a trowel, substantially as described.

2. A bod-handle constructed of a single piece of sheet metal bent into tubular form and having its upper end split and spread to provide forked arms 1), substantially as described.
