0. M. BRION.
v ASH 0R GARBAGE CAN. No. 362,604. Patented May 10, 1887.
J? V l in;
'1'. EEBEE. I D I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. BRION, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
sH 0R GARBAGE CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,604, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed May 19, 1885. Serial No. 166,064. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BRION, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ash or Garbage Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel represents a can embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on line X X, Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line SS. Fig. 4 is a top view, and Fig. 5 is a top view with the hinged lid omitted.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The body or side A of the can I make of sheet metal, preferably of galvanized iron, attached at the top by rivets a to the flange b, projecting downward from the under side of the cast-metal rim B, which serves to protect the upper edge of the can and preserve the top in true circular form. The bottom '0, I also U make of cast metal, having a flange, 0, projecting upwardly, to which the sheet-metal body or side is attached by rivets a.
The central section of the bottom Ois slightly arched upwardly, giving greater strength to the bottom, thereby allowing it to be made thinner, and also, together with the rim D, securing an air-space between the floor and the bottom of the can, obviating the danger of igniting the floor when hot ashes or live coals are placed in the can.
Arranged around the cast-metal bottom, and as part thereof, I form pockets d, and opposite thereto a series of similar pockets, (1, are formed around the cast-metal rim B, in which I insert the ends of wooden staves E, fitting the pockets loosely to allow for any change in their size arising from changes in the tempera ture or humidity of the atmosphere. To the sides I attach the handles 6 e, as is usual in cans of this class.
The upper rim, B, as seen in Fig. 4, is made to cover a portion of the end of the can at f,
j, so that lifting by the handle jwill remove the lid entirely, withdrawing the curved spursg from the holes 9, while lifting the prong or handle i will raise the lid asa hinged lid.
When advisable, the rim B and bottom 0 may also be galvanized, or the entire can may be galvanized after completion, thus closing thejoint between the sides or body A and the bottom 0, and rendering the can Water-tight.
In some cases I make the rim B without a hinged lid, F, in the. form shown in Fig. 5, which adapts the can to receive a circular ashsifter.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an ash or garbage can, the. combination, with a cast-metal rim attached to the top of the can and covering part of the end, and having holes to receive the spurs of the lid, of a lid having curved spurs entering said holes in the rim, spurs projecting from the under side of the lid and resting against the edge of the rim, and a handle attached to the upper side of the lid in proper position to balance the lid, so that the curved spurs will be withdrawn when the lid is raised by the handle, as and for the purpose set forth. 1
2. An ash or garbage can consisting of a sheet-metal body and cast-metal rims attached to the body at each end, said rims. having a series of pockets, and bars or staves with their ends inserted in the pockets and inclosing the sheet-metal side, as and for the purpose set forth.
