N0.l65,256. I I PatentedJu|y6,1875.
N. PEYERS. PNUTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON II C,
UNITED STATES- PATENT QrrroE.
MOSES O. ROBERTS AND KING D. BRIGGS, OF GREAT BEND, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,256, dated July 6, 1875; application filed April 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we,MosEs O. RoBERTs and KING D. BRIGGS, of Great Bend, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Butter-Package, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of our improved packages. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line as as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to the means of securing the cover of the package, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A is the body of the package, which is made slightly flaring from its bottom to within two inches, more or less, of its top, where it is made vertical. butter to be readily turned out, and also allows the cover to fit snugly upon the upper end of the said body. The lower end of the body A is strengthened by a metallic band or hoop, B, which projects half an inch, more or less, below the bottom of the said body A. to protect it. The upper part of the body A is strengthened by a band or .hoop, O, which is placed an inch, more or less, from the top of the said body, so as to serve also as a shoulder for the flange for the cover D to rest upon.
This construction allows the To the upper side of the cover D are attached three or more strips, E, of sheet-metal, which are bent at right angles, so as to pass through loops or keepers 1*, attached to the upper band or hoop G, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ends of the strips E are bent up over the loops or keepers F, when it is desired to fasten the cover. This fastening holds the cover securely in place, and at the same time the said cover can be readily removed by bending down the ends of the strips E. This construction of a butter-package prevents the moisture from soaking out of the butter, and the air from having access to it, so that the butter will keep sweet for a long time. These packagescannot become impregnated with rancid butter and with foul odors, and can be easily washed perfectly clean, so that they can be used for a number of seasons.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of strips E and loops or keepers F with cover D and body A of the package, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
MOSES G. ROBERTS. KING D. BRIGGS.
