UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.t'atented May 1, 1906.
Application filed February 13. 1905- Sarial No- 246,479-
To a l! whom: it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL ARNOLD GAR- nan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful lnmrovement in Poultry-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a receptacle adapted to hold a fowl for the purpose of temporary transportation from the place of purchase to the home of the customer, and 1s designed especiall for the use of dealers in live poultry, bot for the convenience of their customers in carrying home a purchase of a live fowl and also to provide a humane method of carrying the fowl in place of the ordinary method of swinging the same'head downward in carrying it by the feet.
The invention consists of the foldable receptacle having an opening at one end through which the neck and head of the fowl may project and means for fastening the upper edges of the receptacle together, whereby a convenient handle is formed by which the receptacle may be carried.
The invention also consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the receptacle in position for use, the upper edges be-' ing locked together. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the receptacle as it appears when folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectlon through the receptacle partially folded. Fig. 4 is a partial detail plan view of the rece tacle olded, showing the side of the receptac e oposite the side shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 1s a detail perspective view showing a slightly- 1nodified form of handle and fastening means. In the drawings,Aindicates the receptacle, which may be made of a stiff heavy paper or other suitable material, and the lower portion of the sides of the same are adapted to be folded inwardl upon the central longitudinal line of the ottom, as shown at A in Figs. 3 and 5. Areinforcing-strip A is laced vertically on the sides of the receptac e, and on one side about midway the height of the receptacle a circular opening B is formed, which is surrounded by an annular reinforcement B. A reinforcement C is secured to the upper portion of the receptacle and is arranged at right angles to the vertical reinforcmg-stri A, the lower edge of the reinforcement contacting with the upper edges of the strip A". In the upper portion of the receptacle alining slots are formed in the two sides, and a tongue I) is secured at one end beneath a horizontal strip D (shown in Fig. 4,) which is secured upon one face of the 'reinforcement C. The free end of the ton ue D is adapted to be passed through the slbts 1), and the upper marginal portions of the receptacle are bent over upon themselves, as shown at A and adapted to lie under the free end of the tongue D, which serves to lock the u per ed es of the receptacle together. hen locI ed in this manner, the slot D forms a convenient opening for inserting the fingers, and the bent-over portion A will form a convenient handle by which the receptacle can be carried. In Fig. 5 I have shown a slight modification in the construction of the upper ortion of the receptacle A, and in this figure represents a flap adapted to be folded over the upper ed e of the receptacle, and to the flap is attac ed a strip E and a handle F, which may be a link of wire with one of its side members secured between the flap E and the strip E on the line of fold of the flap E. A slot G is formed in the flap E and strip E, and a tongue H, secured to the receptacle, is ada ted to project'through the slot G and lock t e flap A. With these exceptions and the omission of the reinforcement B the construction shown in Fig. 5 is identical with that shown in the other figures, and both forms of the device are used in the same manner.
This receptacle not only forms a convenient method of carrying live poultry, but also possesses many advantages over the ordinary method, not the least of which is the merciful treatment of the fowl being carried.
It is understood, of course, that when the fowl has been placed in the bag or rece tacle and the upper marginal portions folde over and engaged by the tongue D that the hand is passed through the slot D, which serves as a handhold, and that while the receptacle is 1being carried the tongue D is covered by the and.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A poultrycarrier comprising an u wardly-o en bag having an opening in t e side, alinmg slots in the sides, and a tongue adapted to pass through the slots and engage the upper marginal portions of the bag when the same are bent over.
2. A device of the kind described com rising a receptacle adapted to contain a owl, the receptacle having flexible sides adapted to be folded ever u on themselves at the up- 5 er open end of t e receptacle, an opening Eein formed in one side of the receptacle for the ead of the fowl to project through and said receptacle having slots in its opposing sides, a reinforcement upon the up er por- 10 tion of the receptacle ad acent the s ots, and
a tongue secured at one end to the reinforcement and adapted to reject through the slots and engage the fol ed-over portions.
'3. A device of the kind described compris- I 5 in a receptacle having an opening in one si e and having a slot 1n each side adjacent the top of the rece tacle, and a ton e se cured upon one si e of the receptac e and adapted to project 'throu h the slots and en- 20 gage the upper edges of t e receptacle when the same are folded over upon the side of the receptacle opposite that to which the tongue is secured.
4. A device of the kind described compris-- ing a foldable rece tacle, having an opening 25 in one side, a re orcin -strip arranged circumferentially around t e upper portion of the rece tacle, said receptacle axing a'linin slots in t e sides, said slots extending throng the said reinforcing-stri a tongue secured to one side of the receptacie and adapted to extend through the said slots, the upper mar;-
'nal portions being adapted to lie under th ee end of the tongue, as and for the purposg described.
