Be it known that I, Isaac T. BROWN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved box or package of that` class which are designed to be packed in quantities for transportation in a dat shape, and afterward opened out to form a dish or a closed package for carrying fruits, berries, or other dry or se1ni-liquid substances.

The object of my invention is to combine, in an improved manner, a ilexible cord with a folding package formed of paper, paste board, wood veneer, or other material adapted to be scored, cut, and folded into shape, so that said cord shall be permanently connected with the package, and shall be adapted to form a bail for said package, which will support the bottoni and sides thereof, or, when said package is closed on all sides, form a support and fastening therefor.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure l is a perspective view of a partially-opened lfolding box of ordinary wellknown construction, having one end designed to be left open, and having my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the same package in shape for use, except the closing up of the last folding piece forming the bottom or closed end. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the complete package. Fig. 4 is a modification of my device, showing the cord forming the bail, and supporting all the sides of the package. Fig. 5 is an elevation showing a package in its knockdown7 or flat shape, designedto be closed at both ends, and having my improvement attached. Fig. 6 is a. perspective view of the saine package in shape for use, having both endsl closed and secured.

and forming, with similar folding pieces on the other sides, the bottom of the box. b is a cord of flexible material. Said cord is s ecured to the folding piece ce preferably by passing it through holes c c, and across said piece, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. l. From piece a cord Z1 passes upward on the outside longitudinally along opposite sides of the package, then inward through openings d d near the upper edges of said sides. The ends of the cord being tied together, it forms a bail for carrying the package when opened and the end folded up, as shown in Fig. 3.

In the package shown in Fig. 4L all of the sides are supported. One end of the cord b, after leaving piece aand passing longitudinally about half-way up the side, is passed transversely once around the box, and then upward through opening d, as before, thereby supporting two of the sides longitudinally, and all of the sides transversely, as shown. Heretofore in packages of this kind the bail has been secured to opposite sides near the top edge, where it is liable to be torn out by the weight of the article carried, and the bottom has been secured by pasting, gluing, or similar means. In my device the bottom formed from parts continuous with the sides is held in place when the package is in use by the weight of the package, and its contents suspended on the bail, which also helps to support the sides along which it passes against pressure from the inside outward.

ln the package shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the cord b is secured to the end piece, a, and the two opposite sides of the package in exactly the same manner as before described, except that the ends of the cord, after being passed inward through the openings d, are again passed outward through another opening, e, on eachv side, so that the ends of said cord may be tied together closely against the outside of the closed end f of the package, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. Openings d and e are placed quite near each other for the purpose of cramping the4 cord, so that it will not readily become disconnected from the pack` age when in the ilat shape shown in Fig. 5.
