Description
GUSTAV L. JAEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER `BQXES.
Specification forming part of Letters lPatentNo. 117,423, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsrAv L. JAEGER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description there of which Will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciication, in which drawing- Figure l represents a vertical section of this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same when closed. Fig. 3 is aplan of the same folded up ready for transportation. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are modiiications of the same, Figs. 4 and 6 showing sectional, and Fi'gs. 5 and 7 end views of said modifications.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a paper box the heads of which are formed out of one piece with its body, and composed of a series of self-closing flaps held in position when closed bybein g folded one under the other in such a manner that when the ilaps are opened the box can be folded down iiat and packed up in a small compass for transportation, and when the box is to be filled its heads can be closed in a feuY moments by folding in the iiaps, and they can be easily secured in position by pasting on their outsides a label or other piece of paper. With the self-closin g flaps may be combined a hinged lid, and in this case the aps are cut out in such shape that the same, wh en closed, leave an. aperture for the disch arge of the contents of the box, said aperture being closed by means of the hinged lid in such a manner that by fastening said lid the box is closed, and by opening the lid theV contents of the box can be reached Without disturbing` the iaps composing the head or heads.
In the drawing, A designates the body of my box, which may be square, polygonal, or any other desirable form or shape, and the sides a of,
Which are provided at each end With a flap, Z1,
the Whole body of the box together with said flaps being cut out of one piece of pasteboard, so that nothing is needed but to secure the tWo edges of the body together and the box is ready' for transportation. For this. purpose the boxes are folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, so that a large number of them can be packed up in a comparatively small space. When a box is to be used its iiaps at one end are folded, one under the other, either as shown in Figs. l and 2 or as shown in Figs. 4L and 5, and thereby the head at that end is at once closed, and after the box has been lled its other head is closed in the same manner. If desired, the iaps may be fastened by pasting over-them a label or other piece of paper.
By these means a paper box is obtained which can be made at a very small cost, much less than paper boxes of the ordinary construction, and Whichcan be transported with much more convenience thanpaper boxes of the ordinary construction.
For some articles, such as ground coffee or tea, I construct the boxes as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. In this case I cut out the iiaps so that the same, when folded one under the other, will leave an aperture, c, which is covered by a lid, d, made of pasteboard and hinged to the head of the box, as shown. By pasting a piece of paper over this lid the aperture c is securely closed, but if it is desired to hc ve access to the contents of the box the lid is opened and said contents can be poured out either partly or Wholly. When the box is placed inl an upright position the lid drops down upon the aperture c by its inherent gravity and the box is closed. If desired, a similar aperture, c, may be left in the opposite head, and when this aperture is covered with glass the contents ofthe box can be examined Without opening the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The herein-described paper box, the sides of which are provided With iiaps a., so that when folded they interlock with each other and form self-closing heads, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The paper box A, when the flaps a are so cut as to produce the aperture c in one or both Vends of the box, in combination With the hinged lid d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GUSTAV L. JAEGER.
