JAMES W. KNIGHT, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
PAIL FOR OYSTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,863, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed July 10, 1896.
T 0 all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Pails for Oysters, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide apail for carrying oysters, ice-cream, &c., which may be made from paper or strawboard and be capable of being tightly sealed or closed on the top by a folding of the upper edges of the ends and part of sides overalid attached to the pail.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan viewof the blank from which the pail is made; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the pail, showing the flaps and lid raised; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the pail, showing the cover in. place and flaps folded over and fastened by the flaps; and Fig. 4., a perspective View of the lid.
In the drawings, A represents the blank, with the dotted lines indicating the scoring for allowing the blank to be folded into the form of a pail.
or represents that portion of the blank which forms the bottom; 17 6, two of the sides thereof; c c, the remaining sides.
01 d d d represent the inside parts of the V- shaped side folding-flaps. e e e 6 represent the outside portion of said V-shaped side flaps.
g h represent top flaps which fold over each other from each of the sides 6 e.
70 represent flaps formed on the sides or ends I) I).
S represents a flat lid having upturned flaps r 'r at two opposite sides and a downturned flap t at the back, having holes V, through which are inserted clench-brads V, securing the lid to one side I).
Q, represents the bail, having the usual hook ends, which are passed through the paper. When the flaps are brought together, forming the box, as shown in Fig. 2, the top flaps stand vertical and the lid may be raised. When the latter is turned down horizontally,
Serial No: 598,764. (No model.)
the flaps 70 7c are first turned down. Then the flaps h at corners of g g are turned down, after which the side flaps g 9 may be turned down over the lid, if desired, securing it in posi tion or only as shown in Fig. 3. The lid being of the full size of the top forms a stiff brace to resist the tendency of the bail to collapse the pail, when being lifted thereby, with the weight of the contents. The flaps h and 9 may be readily folded back to remove the lid, when desired.
The flaps may be made of any suitable form and size, but I preferably use that shown, which is neat and graceful in outline and provides sufficient fastening for the lid.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. The combination of a paper pail formed of the blank A scored and bent into shape as shown; the lid S provided with the upturned flaps r r and the downward-turned flaps t, the latter being secured at the top of one of the sides of said pail; the flaps g g at two 0pposite sides of the top of said pail and having the flaps h h at each end of said flaps g g and turned over the ends thereof; the flaps lo 70 at the two opposite sides of the top of said pail and turned down over said lid, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a paper pail formed of a blank scored and bent into shape, having the flaps 9 7c h at the top of the sides thereof; the lid S having the flaps r r and t,
the latter secured to one side of said pail, said lid being secured and sealed to said pail by means of the flaps g 70 and flaps h h bent and folded over said flaps g g, substantially as described.
3. In a paper pail formed of a blank scored and bent into shape, the combination of the lid S having the flaps r r and t, the latter secured to one of the sides of said pail; the flaps 9 7c h at the top of the sides of said pail, the said flaps 70 is being folded over the top of said lid, and the flaps h folded over the flaps g of said lid, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES WV. KNIGHT.
