To @ZZ whom t may concern.' y
Be it known that we, LLOYD W. OBEN- OHAIN and DUnwARD B.` DE LONG, citizens of the United States, residing at Denverin the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented newrk and `useful lniprovenients in Sanitary Berry-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements ,in boxes or receptacles designed especially rfor the reception and dispensation of fruits, yvega` tables, etc., and` particularly to Va `saiiitai/"y berry box made from a single piece of material and designed, after having been once used, to be discarded.
The object of the invention is to provide a box of the character stated which may be made from a single die-cut and scored blank of parafined paper or like material, which is simple of construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and which, fwhen formed from the folded blank, will be strong and durable and proof against collapse under all ordinary pressures and strains. 1
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination and f arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, in whicli`\` Figure l is a'perspective view of ya berry box constructed inaccordance with `our in` vention; Figs. 2, Sand 4; iare vertical secwr i along theirgouter side margins in bracing tions through the `box taken on the planes indicated, respectively', by the lines Le?, S and 4 4: of Figi; and Fig. `isa plan view of the blank from which theboxi f' v provided with tures b5.'
is made.' f i c i In ycarrying our inventioninto practice, we provide a boxof yrectangular or oblong rectangular form-made from a singleblank or piece of material, preferably of paraiiined paper or other waterproof `and inexpensive material.
connected pair ofwalls B, B andfC,`C, ,the
Each Wall B and B comprises a body poi"- tion of less width than the side of `the.` bottom A with which it is connected, by "vwliichi` the corner portions a of the blank'are made" to project in the form of tongues for an interlocking actionwith other partspas hereinafter described. The said body portion f the ,f formed "by the side walls and flanges,by `which strength and durability will be secured, adapting the boxto properly stand f the weight of its contents. By thus sup- The box comprisesa bottom pori tion A with the side portions of which 'are by a flange b, and the body portions of the walls C and C, which are also of less Width than the side of the blank to which they..
arey attached, 'to cooperate with'tlie bodies of the walls B and B for the productionfof theftoiigues a, are likewise indirectly connected with the adjacent sides of the bottom `A by flanges c. The iianges ZJ and c are adaped, inthe production of the box from the blank, to befolvded downward at right angles tothe bottomalong. the weakened oi scored lines b and c', while the respective sets of walls are bent upwardly at right an 1 gles to the bottom A but parallel with the flanges b and c, so that in the completed box the bottom will'be elevated, the box being supported by standing `or resting upon doubled downwardlybent portions porting the bottom of the box in an elevated positionsuch portion of the box will be prevented froin collecting dirt and moisture and the contents ofthe box protected to a greater degree against the access of insects from below.
The walls: B and B are provided with members or flanges B3,`fwhi'ch flaps and flanges areadapted tobe bent alongjthe' score lines b3 and b4, and said flaps being."
'The' walls C and C are provided with iapslor corner portions C2 corresponding ing flaps are adapted to be bent along the score line c3 and c4, and the flaps C2 are provided'iwith slits o5 similar to the slits b5.
`'llheflocking flaps C4n` are slitted to provide spaced tongues 66 arranged adjacent to their upper and lower edges, while the locking flaps C4' are cut away at their upper and transverse slits. or yapen,
losl
lower edgeslto' providefkeeper or receiving" i notches c7.
The construction of the blank will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 5
" without` further description, and it will bel l evident 'that' as in this blank all of the poriio l served that like locking flapsv of the wallsy C Y disposed toy interlock withthe fia-p'C* of theV wall Cat Yone side ofthe box, while, on thev ltions lofthe blank liein they same planea large number' of these blanks may be Y Vstacked, together in a. flat package for convenience in storage or transportation, and
that a box may be quickly and conveniently formed from each blank as occasion for its use reopuires.`
In forming a box from the blank, it will be apparent that the flanges l) and c are first Vbent downward ,along` the score lines b and c', and the walls B and BV and" C andA Cv then' bentalong'the score lines b2 and@2 so Yasftov stand' upright, whereby the bottom A upward, the `corner `portions Bzrand AC2k are bentr along the score lines" 3 and c3 so as to extend diagonallylacross the corners ofthe. bottom A, leaving the triangular corner portions a. projecting, the flanges B3 and flaps C3 and C4 being then `bent along the scorel lines Vb4', and c, thus bringingthe4 flaps of` thewalls C and C to lie outside of and parallel with the flaps ofthe walls B and B.
1 After the walls have been bent and' arranged 'in the described manner, it will be seenthatlthe corner portions vC2 of the walls C and C will liev in contact with the, outer surfacesof the cornerk portions B2 voffthe walls B and B andwill thus reinforce and brace theA same, while thev flanges B3. will lap over upon the walls C fand C and give greater strength at the adjacent pointsY of n the passage of the tongues a.,therethrough,
which when bentat an angle on the outside of'said corner portions will hold the lappedl corner portions connected. `It will be o-b-,
andjC vare `disposed at diametrically opposite sidesof theblank, so that when the wallsV are folded the flap vC3 of the wall C willbe contrary, the flapCf" ofthe wall Cf will be arranged to interlock with the flap C4 of the wall C at the diametrically opposite side *of* the box, the tongues o of the flapsC1 being;
arranged` to engage the notches c7 of the flaps C3, whereby .a secure lockingconnecf tion-isleffected.y The boxy thus constructed.
will be double-walled at two of the sidesv and reinforced at the' other two sides, interlocked tenedr toxeach other.- anolftov the bottom portion atthe corners of the box, making a box,
of` maximum strength and durability. In `asmuch as thisbox s'made Vof, paraflined paper and Aformed from a single blank, it is obvious that. abox ofinexpensive Construcitionis provided and one which is sanitary in every respect and inexpensive enough to be usedonce only and thenfthrown away. The construction described furthermore adapts the boxes to be made at a much lower cost than the ordinary wooden berry boxes.
Y TWe claim as our invention:
