Description

J.`HACKETT Improvement in Burial Cases.
Patented DeG.5,1871.
m m .b /QK H.. ww. Y
ituszn: ind/ZU@ www PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HAOKETT, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
' IMPROVEMENT IN BURIAL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,616, dated December 5, 187].
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HAGKETT, of Louisville, in the county of J ei'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented an Improved Burial-Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part oi' this specification.
My invention consists in the manner of connecting the top molding to the sheet-metal side, all as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a section of a side of a burial-case provided with the cast-metal moldings, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same taken on the line x x.
A represents the sheet-inetal side of the casket, generally made of zinc. B is the lower cast-metal molding, and C the upper one. These are cast, in any ornamental form, in cross-section, that may be preferred, being in thin plates fitting the side of the cofn at one'edge, D, and springing away from the side as they extend to the plane of the edge of the said side, in order to make them as tight as possible; they are connected to the side, at or near the edge D, by rivets E. The lower one is connected, at its lower edge, tothe cofn-side by the sheet-metal anged plate F, soldered to it by one of its edges, and connected to or bearing against the side of A by its outer edge. The upper molding is provided With a recess, G, in its upper corner, fronting the side A, which receives the edge of a cast-zinc angle-bar, H, the flange I of which is soldered to the side A at the upper edge. This angle-bar serves to straighten the top edge of the side of the body, and to take the strain off the rivets when the top is secured down on the body. This is important,
as any strain on the rivets might create a leak, l
which would ruin the casket.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The casting (l riveted to the sheet-metal side A of a burial-casket, and the piece H resting in recess G thereof and soldered to said side, as specified.
JOSEPH HACKETT.
