N.PEEHS, FHOTD-IJTHOGRAPHE. WASHINGTON D C n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES GILBERDS, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPRQVEMENT IN BUTTER-PAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,212, dated April 3, 1877; application filed Y January 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GrLBEEDs, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Butter-Bail, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line m x in Fig. l. v
4Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawing, A is a butter-pail, made in the ordinary way, except that a rabbet, a, is made at the inner side of the upper edge of the pail, to receive the cover B.
C is an L-shaped clip attached to the side of the pail, and extending over the cover a sufficient distance to retain it in the rabbet a. This clip may be formed of wrought or cast iron, and it may be attached to the pail by nails, rivets, or screws.
D is a hasp, consisting ofa piece of sheet metal, attached to the vcover B, and bent downward at nearly a right angle, and provided with a slot, b, which slips over a hoolr or button, c, screwed into the side of the pail at a point opposite the clip C.
The edge of the cover B opposite the hasp D v is placed in the rabbet a under the projecting portion of the clip C. The cover is then placed wholly in the rabbet, and at the same time the hasp D is sprung over the button c, and the button c is turned downward over th lower portion of the hasp.
To prevent the cover from swelling, I saturate it with parafne or other waterprooing material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe combination of the pail A, having rabbet a and angular metallic clip C, and rotating button c, with the cover B, resting on the rabbet, with its top Hush with the top of the pail, and4 having the angular and slotted springhasp D rigidly attached, all as set forth.
JAMES GILBERDS. Witnesses:
BYRON A. BAELow, JOHN LANGFOED.
