DEVICE FOR SECURING- EDGES OF FABRICS WITHIN A FRAME.
ooaaoa.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDVARD GARLSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing the Edges of Fabrics lVithin a Frame; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for securing the edges of fabrics within a frame.
It has for its primary object the provision of a frame such as is adapted to fit within windows, doors or similar openings, and retain within these openings a screen made of any suitable material, such as wire fabric or netting. It is of a very simple and inexpensive type of construction, being pressed or stamped from continuous strips of metal, and easily assembled.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully ClBSCIlbBCLClZLlIHQCl and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hollow frame; Figs. 3 and 4: are fragmentary perspective views of two of the closing strips, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of another of the closing strips.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates in general a continuous hollow frame, formed from a strip of thin metal bent in substantially U-shaped cross sectional formation. The free edges 2 of the horizontal extensions of this strip are bent inwardly and interlocked, as at 3, with the edges of a closing strip 4:. The closing strip, which is secured to the vertical edges, is pressed outwardly, as at 4', for engagement with the guides of an ordinary window frame. The bottom of the U-shaped frame is then formed or pressed inwardly to provide a recess, having its bottom surface 5 substantially parallel Specification of Letters Patent.

to the closing strip 4. One side ofthe recess is shaped or extended inwardly in the form of a groove 6, being directly under one side of the bottom or closed end of the U- shaped frame. The other side of the recess is depressed slightly below the upper edge 7 of the upright side 8, thereby forming a lip 9. The edge of the fabric 10 is then placed within this recess and across its bottom, and is secured in place by the spring action of a closing strip 11 formed from a continuous strip of met-a1 having a hori zontal section 12, slightly less in width than the bottom 5 of the recess in the hollow frame, and one edge formed upward in a vertical surface 13, the upper portion of which is bent, as at 14, at substantially an angle of 45, so that its upper edge, when placed on the hollow frame, will approximately coincide with the upper edge of the frame. It will be seen from this that when this closing strip is placed within the recess it will have to be forced down over the lip 9, the horizontal section 12 extending within the groove 6, and thus firmly holding the fabric 10 within the frame. It is moreover clear that the closing strip may be easily removed by inserting a tool, such as a screw driver, within the lip 9, and forcing the closing strip upward and allowing it to slide out over the lip 9, thereby freeing the fabric.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device such as described for securing the edge of a sheet of fabric within a frame, and consisting of a continuous hollow frame formed by pressing a strip of thin metal in substantially U-shaped cross sectional formation, the free edges of said frame being bent inward and interlocked with the edges of a closing strip, the bottom of the U- metal having a horizontal section slightly In testimony whereof I affix my signature :IERLII'OWQI than the recefss formed in the in presence of two Witnesses.
rame, a vertical section ormed on one side the upper part of which is bent inwardly at EDVARD GARLSON' approximately 45 to register with the upper edge of the frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
