COPY-u CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,290, dated October 7, 1884.
Application filed January 15, 18S4. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom bimby concern:
Be it known that I, MYnoN ADnLiennr SHERMAN, of Grant Fork, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have inventedV a new and useful Improvement in Oopy-Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- aet description. y
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved case, partly open. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line a7 x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation ofthe same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a part of the blank for the cover of the case. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a part of the blank for the body of the case. The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable, and convenient case for the copies to be used in learning` penmanship.
The invention consists in a copy-case constructed with a sheet-metal body having the upper parts of its sides bent outward, upward, and inward to form grooves, and a cover formed of a glass plate provided with a sheetmetal frame having its ends bent downward across the end edges of the glass plate, and its sides bent downward across the side edges of the said glass plate, and then bent inward, downward, and outward to form flanges to fit and slide in the grooves of the ease-body, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The body of the ease is formed of a plate, A, of tin, tin-plate, or other suitable sheet metal. The plate A has its angles cut away, as shown in Fig. 5, leaving narrow end anges B and wide side flanges O. The end iianges B are bent upward at right angles to form the ends E of the case-body D. rIhe side flanges O arebent upward at right angles to form the sides F of' the said case-body D. The sides F at points in line with the top edges of the ends E are bent outward, npward, and inward to form grooves N to receive the guide-flanges of the cover, hereinalter described. The cover is formed of a glass plate, G, provided with a frame or bind ing, I-I, of tin or other suitable sheet metal. The binding or frame II is formed of a plate, I, of sheet metal, having its middle part out away to expose the middle part of the glass plate G, and allow the top copy in the case to be distinctly seen. I prefer to form the inner edge ofthe frame II with rounded angles, as shown in Figs. l and 4, to strengthen the said frame at its corners, and to give the cover a more attractive appearance. The corners of the plate I are eut away, forming narrow end flanges J and wider side flanges K. The end flanges J are bent downward at right angles to form the ends L of the cover G H, the said flanges J being made of such a width that the lower edges ofthe ends L will be flush with the lower surface of the glass plate G, so that the said edges will not scratch or tear the top copy when the cover is being slid on and off. yThe side flanges K of the blank I are bent downward at right angles across the side edges of the glass plate G, and are then bent inward, downward, and outward, as shown in Fig. 3, to form flanges M to fit and slide in the grooves N of the casebody D. lVith this construction the cover G II can be readily slide on and off at either end of the case to allow the copies to be put in and taken out.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A copycase constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and'consisting of the sheet-metal body D, having the upper parts of its sides F bent outward, upward, and inward to forni grooves N, and the glass plate G, provided with a sheet-metal frame, H, having its ends L bent downward across the end edges of the glass plate G, and its sides bent downward across the side edges vof the said glass plate, and then bent inward, downward, and outward to form flanges M to fit and slide in the grooves N of the case-body D, as set forth.
2. In a copy-case, the cover, made substantially as herein shown and described, with a glass plate, G, provided with a sheet-metal frarne, II, having' its ends L bent down across the end edges of the glass plate, and its sides bent downward across the side edges of the said glass plate, and then bent inward, downward, and outward to form flanges adapted to slide in the grooves of the case-body, as set forth.
