To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oreana, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Baskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in metal receptacles and more particularly to a metal basket and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having an improved sectional cover therefor.

A further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred toand more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim. I

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse section through the hinge of one of the sections of the cover.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary transverse section showing the formation of the bead and a section of the'lid resting thereon. Fig. 5 is a vertical section as seen on line 55 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section as seen on line 6-6, of Fig. 2.

In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the bottom of a basket, the same being of elongated design and 2 and 3 indicate, respectively, the sides and ends thereof, said sides and ends being formed of sheets of metal interlocked with the outer edges of the bottom. This interlocking of the sheets of metal and the bottom may be accomplished in any. desired manner. r

2 and 3, respectively, are doubled upon themselves tightly, the doubled portions being bent inwardly and the extremefree ends of these doubled portions are bent and curved to form a bead 4 which is substantially continuous throughout the walls of the device. This bead is ob vlously disposed in a plane slightly below the upper edges of the walls and is reim forced by a wire or the like I disposed in said bead and around which the same is a plate or strip of metal 6 is mounted tov rest on the bead between the side walls, about centrally'of the latter. The sideedges of this plate 0r strip are provided with integral elongated flanges which are rolled upwardly and downwardly to form the sleevelike portions or knuckles 7. The side walls at points just above the plane of the bead 4, are provided with openings 8 which are allned with the aforesaid sleeve or knuckles pair of lid sections 9 are provided and designed to fit between the central strip or plate 6 and the ends and side walls and to rest on the bead 4 and the inner edges of saidlid sections at the ends thereof are provided with flanges which are turned upwardly and downwardly to form sleeves or knuckles 10 complementary to the sleeves or knuckles 7. When the lids are properly positioned on the head between the walls of the device and the central strip or plate 6, these sleeves or knuckles 7 and 8 aline with one another and also with the openings 8 in the side walls of the device. In this manner the hinges formed by the knuckles and pintles will retain their shape through constant use indefinitely.

It will also be seen that the device is one which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.

While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that .various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

mamas Having thus described this invention, what'is claimed is A metal-receptacle comprising a body, a continuous bead mounted on the inner faces of the side and end walls thereof in a plane below the plane of the upper edges of said walls, a transverse plate rigidly mounted on said bead centrally of the side walls, said plate being provided with central-elongated flanges curved upwardly and inwardly to form knuckles, lid sections adapted to rest on the head between the side and end walls and the outer edges of said transverse plate, the inner edges of said lid sections being provided with flanges turned upwardly and inwardly to provide knuckles for alinement with the knuckles of said transverse plate, and means insertible through the side walls and through the alining knuckles of said lid sections and the transverse plate to secure said lid sections on the latter.
