' trunks, formed by UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CROUCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRAY-BOLTS FOR TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 178 l 17, dated May 30, 1876,- application filed April 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CROUCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use Improve ments in the Construction of Tray-Bolts for Trunks; and that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which v Figure l is a sectional view of my tray-bolt as applied to a trunk-tray. Fig.2 is a sectional view of a second form of bolt applied to a trunk-tray. Fig. 3 is a front view of a trunk to which both forms of bolt have been applied.
In the drawing, like parts of the invention are pointed out by ence.
The nature of the present invention consists in the construction of a tray-bolt for combining a plate struck up from a single piece of metal, and having a portion of its surface raised and slotted, with a bolt, auxiliary plate of metal, and loop, as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed, the object of the invention being the producing of a traybolt simple in construction and operation, and one that can be afforded at a low cost.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
A shows a plate of metal, having a portion of its surface raised or pressed up so that its opposite side shall form a way or guide, in which the bolt B moves to and fro, or up and down. This plate A is slotted, as at a, so that after the bolt B has been inserted in its recessed portion, a second plate of metal, 0, placed over the slot at, and having a bearing upon the raised portion of the plate A, may be firmly attached in any convenient manner to the bolt B. B shows the bolt formed of meta], and made straight for its entire length,
the same letters of referas shown in Fig. 1; or the upper portion of the metal of which it is composed may be bent at right angles to the lower portion of the bolt, and then bent upward, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. 0 shows an auxiliary plate of metal, curved so that when placed in position over the front of the plate A and united to the bolt placed upon the opposite side of the plate 'A, it shall form a spring to retain the bolt B in position, either when the bolt is pressed upward or downward. D shows a circular loop, formed of leather or any suitable material, and attached to the face of the plate 0.
Such being the construction, the operation may be thus described: The plate A, having the bolt B and auxiliary plate G, provided with the loop D, is attachednpon the face or front portion of the tray of a trunk; and to secure the tray after being closed in position in the trunk, the bolt B is moved up by taking hold of the loop D, attached to the plate 0, until it enters, it made in the form-shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the nosing or keeper F, set into the trunk at its top edge. When the bolt is made as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the upper portion of its projecting surface is passed behind an iron frame secured within the top of trunk, and forming, as it were,
a continuation of the same, the auxiliary plate O, as already stated, forming a spring to hold the bolt in position.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is-- The combination of the plate A, struck up from a single plate of metal, and having a portion of its surface raised and slotted, as at a, a bolt, B, auxiliary plate of metal O, and loop D, constructed and operating substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
GEO. CROUCH.
