Description

B. A. ARMSTRONG. Drawer-Front.
No. 224,066. Patented Feb. 3,- sso.
' U ITED STATES PATENT 7 OFFICE.
BENJAMIN A. ARMSTRONG, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
D RAWER-FRO NT.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,066, dated February-3, 1880.
Application filed August 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. ARM- STRONG, of New York city, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer- Fronts, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to certain metal strips which serve as means for confining the rings or drawerpulls. They allow, better than heretofore, the employment of glass as the material for the front. The metal parts may be cheaply constructed and easily applied.
The invention is intended more particularly for the shallow drawersin cases for exhibiting fancy articles, as cotton, silk, 850., on spools; butit may be used in a great variety of situations.
It will be understood that one of the fastenings is applied at each end of the drawerfront, and serves not only to attach the ring or other pull by which the drawer is drawn out, but also to strongly holdthe front plate, whether of glass or other material, to the sides. The latter, it will be understood, are of wood.
Accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure I is a perspective view of part of drawer with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. II is a. partial internal view of the same. Fig. Ill represents a plan View of the fastening separately previous to being applied to adrawer.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the figures.
A is the bottom, B B the sides, and G the front, of the drawer. The front 0 is of glass. The sides B and bottom A are of wood.
D D, 850., are peculiarly-shaped pieces of sheet metal, cut by dies or otherwise from a flat platein the form indicated in Fig. III, and bent at right angles along thelines a a b I) into the form shown clearlyin Figs. 1 and II. A description of one of these attachments will suffice for both. One is placed at each side of the front.
E is a ring serving as a drawer-pull. It is inserted through holes in the metal D, so as to form afirm attachment, with liberty to turn down when the pull is not required.
I will designate some of the parts of the metal by additional marks, as D D The front part or main face is marked simply D. The parts which form the top and bottom of the device, and which extend across the thickness of the front 0 at the top andbottom respectively, are marked D. The parts which extend upward and downward on the back face of the front piece, 0, are marked D and the additional part, which extends inward along the inner face of the side B, is marked D Each part D has a hole, 01.
In applying my parts together the clasps D are placed in position on the front piece, 0, and caused to fit snugly, being bent, by machinery or otherwise, into the correct form without bruising or destroying the metal; then, on applying the front with these attachments in their proper position, the whole is secured by nails or screws G, inserted into the sides B through the holes d The front (J is prevented from becoming displaced endwise by being received into recesses b in.the front of thesides B of the drawer.
If preferred, however, extensions may be made, extending backward so as to cover the D the side extensions, D and fastenings G, in combination with the front plate, 0, sides B, and bottom A, as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto .set my hand this 13th day of August, 1879, in the presence of two suhscribin g witnesses. I
BENJ. A. ARMSTRONG.
