UNrTED STATES PATENT @Turion JAMES THORNTON,`OF WELLSVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH HIS RIGHT TO PRATT St LETGHWORTH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
f IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 170,209, dated November 23, 1875; application led October 12, 1875.
CASE B.
is fully set forth in the following specitica` tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. u
My invention relates more particularly to that kind of hames which are provided near the top with a corrugated strip or plate, to which the loop to which the upper hame-strap is attached is adjnstably connected; and it relates to an improved manner of securing the corrugated plate to the hame.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a front elevation, of the top portion of a haine provided with my improvements. Fig.
i 4 is a cross-section in line w a2, Fig. 2. Fig. 5
is a detached view of the corrugated plate in a slightly-modiiied form.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the figures.
' A represents the Wooden portion of a haine made in the usual form, and B the metallic back strap. C is the corrugated metallic plate to which the loop D of the hame-strap is adjustably connected. The inner edge of the plate C is make tapering or Wedge-shaped in cross-section, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, so
as to be readily driven into the wood, While its outer edge is provided with a series of notches or ccrrugations, c, in which the loop l) is engaged. The back'strap B is provided on the front side of the hame with a narrow slot, b, corresponding in size with the length and thickness of the plate O, so as to allow the latter to be readily driven into the wood, while at the same time retaining the plate against lateral displacement.
lt' preferred, the inner Wedge-shaped edge of the plate O may be provided with one or more pointed prongs, e, for better securing it in the wooden portion of the hame.
The plate C, constructed as above described, is very cheaply manufactured, while presenting a pleasing appearance, and is readily and securely attached to the haine at a small expense.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the haine and backstrap B, provided'with slot b, of the plate O, having its outer edge corrugated, and its inner edge tapering or wedge-shaped, substantially as and for the purpose hereinhefore set forth.
JAMES THORNTON.
