DAVID SWARTZ AND SAMUEL SWARTZ, OF TOMS BROOK, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS OF PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 11,575, dated August 22, 1854.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DAVID SWAR'IZ and SAMUEL SWARTZ, of Torns Brook, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the method of fastening the point and cutter to the plow by constructing them in separate pieces with tongues or flanges which slide horizontally in slots formed in the mold-board and landside, whereby a secure fastening is formed for them without the use of screws or bolts, the passage of the plow through the ground keeping them in their place, thereby rendering their removal easy, making the plow more convenient and efticientin its action, and cheaper and more durable.

We cast the moldboard and landside in one piece of metal, extending a slot, 0, from the foot of the plow to near the upper edge of the landside, and providing a flange or bracket, D, in the bottom edge of the landside, and a flange or bracket, D, projecting inward from the landside, so as to divide the slot 0 into two parts, one of which is to receive a tongue or flange, H, formed on the point, and the other to receive a tongue or flange, F, formed on the cutter.
The cutter and point may be constructed in one single piece, as shown in Fig. III, but this method of construction does not answer so well as that represented in Fig. II.
The pointand cutter are formed with tongues or flanges which fit the slot 0, the upper tongue, or that of the cutter E, fitting and sliding in the upper part of the slotcand thelower tongue, H, or that of the point, sliding between the flange D and flange D, said tongues being provided with shoulders which rest againstthe edges of the mold-board and landside, so that the sides of the point and cutter when slid in place shall be flush with those of the landside and mold-board.
The point and cutter are formed as represented in Fig. II, so that when slid into place the shoulder G of point presses against the end of the cutter I, which keeps both of them in place without the use of screws or bolts, the action of the plow in the ground answering all the purposes of screws and bolts.
We do not claim constructing the point and cutter in separate pieces, so as to be attached and detached at pleasure; but
We do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Constructing the mold-board and landside with slots, as described, and the point and cutter with tongues or flanges to fit the said slots,
so that the said point and cutter shall slidein horizontally, or nearly so, and form a fastening with the mold-board and landside Without the use of screws or bolts, substantiaily as set forth.
