Description

T. A. DAViES.
Bolts. 7
Patented Dec. 24, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT Drrron.
THOMAS A. DAVIES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,262, dated D ember 24, 1872. H
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. DAVIES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolts for Doors, &c., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal section of my improved bolt taken through the line 00 :22, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same taken through the line y 3 Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved bolt for doors and other uses, which shall be so constructed that it may be applied to thin boards, and which shall be simple in construction, conveniently applied, and not liable to get out of order. The invention consists in a spring, slotted to receive bolt, and having bent ends to rest against a plate, and combined with a bolt provided with eye, as hereinafter fully described.
A' represents the bolt, in the inner end of which is formed a loop or eye to receive the pintle B, upon the outer end of which pintle is formed aknob, button, or thumb-piece,
.which is made flat so that it may be passed through a slot in the plate 0. To the pintle B, in such a position as to be beneath the plate G, is secured a plate, D, which is kept from turning by its side edges resting against the sides of the recess or mortise in which the operating parts of the bolt are placed. E is a spring, the ends of which are bent to rest against the plate G. The spring E is slotted for the passage of the pintle B, said slot being made so large that'the button or thumbpiece of the pintle can be passed through it.
In cases where there is sufficient thickness of material the plate 0 may be recessed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, so that the button or thumb-piece of the pintle will not project beyond the surface, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to adapt it for use as a flush bolt.
In cases where the material of the door or other article is light, the plateO may be made flat. In this case the spring E may be placed beneath the plate 0, between it and the plate I), it being immaterial upon which side of the plate Othe said spring E be placed.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The pintle or thumb-piece B, combined with a bolt, A, having'an eye at the end, into which the pintle plays loosely, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The slotted spring E having bent ends, combined with slotted plate (land held thereon by the shoulder of the thumb-piece, and the bolt A having pintle-eye, as and for the purpose described.
THOS. A. DAVIES.
