Description
. tener, and a portion of the casing and door door B, and located to engage the projection integral plate of metal, first cut as shown in UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED. W. TOBEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
. DOOR-FASTENER.
\ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,999, dated November 21, 1893.
' Application filed Pebruaryfl, 1893- $erial No. 460,745. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED. W. TOBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. r
My invention relates to an improved door fastening, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a casing and door, having my improved fastener attached; Fig.2 a horizontal section through the fason the line 22 of Fig.1; Fig. 3 a plan view of the sheet metal blank of which the fastener is formed; Fig. 4 a side elevation; and Fig. 5 a plan view of the fastener after forming, and before attachment to the door.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
A represents the door casing, and B the door hinged to the same in the usual manner.
0 is a knob or projection, having a rounded or hemi-spherical form, which may conveniently consist of the round head of a suitable nail, or screwdriven into the casing.
Within a suitable recess in the edge of the C is a spring fastener, which is formed of an Fig. 3, consisting substantially of a disk D, with a segment removed at I and a central opening F, and connected to a similar disk D, by a neck or' narrower part G, said disk D also having a central opening F somewhat smaller than the opening F, and a rectangular extension H opposite the disk D-; the part D is then stamped into a substantially concavo-convex form, having a central depression E, to engage the projection 0 when the door is closed, the plate is "then folded upon itself at the narrow part G, forming a semi-cylindrical flexible connection atpne side, and the extension H is'turned at right angles to the part D, with its outer edge opposite the edge I of. the disk D, which latter is now supported a'short distance from and substantially parallel to the disk D by the flexible neck, or connection G. This fastener so made is now placed ina suitable recess in the edge of the door with the convex side outward, and secured byasuitable screw or nail passed through the openings F and F, anddriven into the door, with its head engaging the part D. When the door closes the concave plate will engage the projection O, and yielding toward the plate D, by the flexibility of the part G, will pass the same, and springing outward will engage said projection, with its depression E, and thus secure the door. The .part H serves to close 'the opening between the parts D and D, and
also at its ends engages the inner surface of the door and prevents the fastener from tnrning about its axis. This later purpose in also served by the angles of the part G.
What I claim is 1. In a door fastening two substantially Y ings, a screw engaging one of said openings to secure said plate in place and a fixed rounded projection engaging the other of said openings, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a spring catch or fastener, consisting of an integral plate, having near the middle a flexible fold, and having superposed openings, one part being flat and the otherbeing convex on its outer surface, and having a central depression, substantially as described.
3. In a door fastener, a spring catch made of an integral piece of sheet metal, consisting essentially of two disks connected by a semicylindrical flexible portion, and havingcem tral openings, one of said disks also having a convex surface, with a central depression and a segment removed from its free side, and the other disk having a rectangular extension at right angles to its plane, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
Faun. w.,'roBnY.
