Description
E. F. MAUL.
SASH FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 1|. 1915.
Patented Dec. 14, 1915.
Attorneys ELWOOD F. MAUL, OF WEST PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTENEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 14,1915.
Appiication filed May 11, 1915. Serial No. 27,379.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ELwooD F. MAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to sash fasteners, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character.
The object of the invention is the provision of a sash fastener of simple and inexpensive construction, which will serve'its oflice in a convenient, practical and efficient manner, the device also being neat and attractive in appearance and consisting of but few parts.
As a more specific object, the invention aims to provide a sash fastener adapted for holding the sash in place by friction and spring tension, the device being flexible or yieldable in order to accommodate the sash properly and effectively.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved sash fastener in operative position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device in released or inoperative position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the rotatable actuating member. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the base or supporting member.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an elongated base 1 constructed of metal or other suitable material, and adapted to be secured to the window frame F by means of screws or other securing elements 2. This base 1 is provided with a circular boss 3 upon one side, and with a recess or depression 1 at its other side and directly opposite the boss 3. The base 1 has an aperture 5 arranged centrally of and extending between the face of the boss 3 and recess 4. The face of the boss 3 has a diametrical rib 6 which s int rsected by the aperture 5.
The hub 7 has a chordal kerf or slot 14 re ceiving the ends of an elliptical or loopshaped spring 15 which is located entirely at one side of said hub, the ends of the spring 15 being secured within the kerf or slot 14 in any suitable manner whereby the spring will be carried by the hub. The minor axis of the spring 15 intersects the axis or rivet 10 of the hub 7, while the major axis of the spring 15 is parallel to a plane in which the axis or rivet 10 of the hub 7 lies. The spring 15 lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of the hub 7.
The present device may be used for various purposes, and upon various window constructions. hen the device is employed for fastening a sash in place, the base 1 is secured to the window frame F at a point adjacent the sash S, and a wear plate 16 is preferably secured to the sash for the engagement of the spring 15 therewith to prevent the wood work of the sash being injured. The base 1 is so arranged that the spring 15 will properly engage the wear plate 16 when the finger piece 8 is swung to fasten the sash in place. When the finger piece 8 is swung in one direction, the spring 15 will bear against the wear plate 16, and will yield so that the tension of the spring comes into play for holding the sash S in place by spring tension and friction, so that the sash will not vibrate and cannot be moved until the device is released. By swinging the finger piece 8 properly, the spring 15 may be readily swung away from the sash, and when the device is in either of the positions illustrated in Figs. 1' and 2, the rib 6 will be received by the groove 13 of the hub 7 to hold the spring in either operative or inoperative position.
The device may be located at various points upon the window frame, according to the circumstances, and is of advantage for reasons which will be obvious from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, without reiteration or further comment being necessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, a rotatable member, and a loop -shaped spring located entirely at one side thereof and having its ends secured to said member.
2. In a device of the character described, a base, a rotatable member pivoted thereto, and a loop-shaped spring carried by the rotatable member, the rotatable member and Copies of this patent may be obtained for base having interengageable means for holding the spring at operative and inoperative positions. H
8. In a device of the character described, a base having a boss and an opposite recess, the face of said boss having a diametrical rib, the base having an aperture centrally of said boss, a rotatable member seating against said boss and having a bore aliningwith said aperture, the rotatable member having a diametrical groove for receiving said rib, a rivet engaged through said bore and aperture and having heads seating in said recess and against said rotatable member, and a loop-shaped spring carried by said rotatable member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELWOOD F. MAUL.
