To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. TIMMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at John Day, in the county of Grantand State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Bumpers with Latch Attachments; andldo declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apportains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a combined door stop and holder or retainer; and, among other things, it has for its object to provide a stop which may be set or adjusted for any angle, to provide a gravitating latch which will be automatic in operation to catch and hold the door when it has been opened to its fullest extent, and to so adapt the latch that it may be thrown into a position so that the stop may be used irrespective of the catch or holder, when desired.

Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved device, showing the same applied to a base or sill board of a room and the latch shown in a position as retaining or holding the door, the door being partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder and stop removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same taken in the plane indicated by the dotted lines moon Fig. 1. Referring by letter to said drawings, A. indicates a bracket having a flange a, which is provided with screw-holes, as shown, whereby the same may be secured to the sill or base board of a room. This bracket is provided with a lug b, bearing a vertically-disposed eye 0, and the upper horizontal face or side of this lug is corrugated or provided with a ratchetlike face d for a purpose which will be presently explained. The bracket is furthermore provided in rear of and extending above the plane of the lug b with a semicircular wall 0.

B indicates the stop, which is preferably fectangular in cross section, of a suitable length and width, and may be made from castiron or other suitable material. This stop is provided in its outer' end with a socket to receive a rubber or other cushion f, which projects sufficiently to receive the door as it is thrown open, and the opposite or inner end of this stop is provided with a lug g, rounded off at its terminal end, as shown at h, so as to work withinthe circularwall e of the bracket. This lug has its under horizontal face or side provided with a roughness or teeth corresponding with those on the face of the lug b and are designed to interlock therewith. The lug or projection gis also provided with the vertical hole, which is designed to register with the hole 0 in the lug of the bracket, so as to receive a bolt 2', carrying a wing-nut 70, whereby the stop may be connected to the bracket in a hinged manner, and by the employment of the wing-nut or set-screw said stop may be turned to any desired angle and fixed in such position by tightening thenut. By this construction I am enabled to adjust the stop for doors having a greater or less swing, and the latch, as will be presently described, will be rendered more elfective thereby. The stop Bis provided on its upper side with two vertically-disposed parallel flanges Z. These flanges are provided at corresponding points with curvilinear slots m, and these slots are provided at their forward ends with offsets, as shown at n, for a purpose which will be presently explained.

0 indicates a latch. This latch is designed to have a longitudinal or reciprocating motion, and is arranged between the flanges Z, so that its pivot stud or pintle p, which projects from corresponding points on opposite sides, may enter and play in the slots m, and also the offsets n. The latch is also provided at one end with a head designed to engage with a plate or keeper carried by the door, and its opposite end is provided with a knob r, whereby the latch may be manipulated by the hand or foot.

D indicates a door, which should have its inner lower side recessed, as shown at s, and E indicates a plate or keeper, which is secured to the door by screws or the like and has an aperture 13 of slightly less diameter than that of the recess of the door D, so that while the engaging end of the latch may enter the aperture in the door it may be allowed to engage the lower edge of the aperture in the plate secured to the door.

By the employment of this rocking or pivoted and reciprocating latch it will be seen that when it is seated with its pivot-studs in the oitsets of theslots m it will have its engaging end sufficiently projected beyond the stop, so as to catch the plate on the door when said door has been thrown back or opened, while by simply sliding the latch back in the position shown in dotted lines said latch will be thrown out of operation and the stop or bumper only can be used at that time.

While I have described the device as being provided with the curvilinear slots in the flanges, yet it is obvious that straight slots might be employed or in some cases the slots might be dispensed with and a plurality of notches corresponding in outline with the offsets 11. may be used, as it is simply necessary that the latch should be pivoted, so that its engaging end may work automatic, and it should be slidable, so that it may be withdrawn when it is desired to throw it out of use and operate the stop or bumper only, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described. I am also aware that changes might be made in the manner of connecting the stop to the bracket, as it is only necessary to practically carry out this feature of my invention to have horizontal hinge or flexible points'with suitable means for fixing the parts at desired angles.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a door stop and retainer, substantially as described, the combination, with the stop provided on its upper side with flanges havin g corresponding longitudinal slots provided with an offset at their forward ends, of the slidable gravitating latch having a pivot stud or lug projecting from opposite sides and arranged to play in the slots and offsets of the flanges on the stop, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a door stop and retainer, substantially as described, the combination, with a bracket having an attaching flange, a semicircular wall, as c, and a lug arranged in advance of the wall 2 and below the horizontal plane of the same and provided with the vertical eye or aperture and the corrugated or ratchet-like face, of the stop having the rounded lug g at its inner end, provided with a corrugated or ratchet-like face, adapted to engage the corresponding face of the bracket-lug and having an aperture corresponding with the aperture of said bracket-lug, a pivot-bolt taking through the aperture of the bracket-lug and the stop-lug, and a wing-nut mounted on said pivot-bolt, substantially as specified.

3. The improved door stop and retainer described, comprising a bracket to be secured to the base or sill board of a room, a stop and a pivot-bolt, and sot-nut for adj nstably connecting the stop to the bracket, said stop being also provided on its upper side with flanges having corresponding longitudinal slots provided with an oifset at their forward ends, and the slidable gravitating latch having a pivot stud or lug projecting from opposite sides and arranged to play in the slots and oifsets thereof, substantially as specified.
