No. 401,832. Patented Apr. 23, 1889.
WITNESSE y BY I ,ATTORSE? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB B. HARTMAN, OF \VOOSTER, OHIO.
HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 401,832, dated April 23, 1889.
Application filed August 23, 1888- Serial No. 5283,5318. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. HARTMAN, of Wooster, in the county of Vayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to handles, and more especially to a drop-pull or handle adapted to be secured to sliding window-blinds to operate the same; but it will be understood that I do not confine the application of my invention as above indicated, but reserve the right to apply it to different objects whenever found convenient or useful.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this, character that will be simple, durable, and inexpensive.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts here inafter fully described, and pointed out it the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention with parts broken away. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a modification.
A represents a portion of the bottom rail of a sliding window-blind.
B represents mortises made in said rail.
My improved drop-pull or handle consists of a plate, C, and handle E. The plate O is provided with perforations D, and is secured to the lower edge of the rail A,having the perforations D registering with the mortises B. The handle-piece E comprises a body portion, F, and arms G. The arms G are parallel, and the distance between them is the distance between the perforations D, so that the said arms will pass through the said perforations and into the mortises. Each of the arms is provided with inwardly-turned ends H, which prevent the handle from being removed from the plate when the latter is secured to any ob ject. WVhen the plate is detached, the handle can be easily removed by turning it obliquely to the plate.
In Fig. 2 Ihave shown a modification. This modified form of handle is intended to be secured to the top rail of a blind or equivalent device. I represents a portion of the top rail of a blind. Said rail is recessed, as shown at J, and is provided with mortises K. L represents a plate having a depressed port-ion, M, which fits into the recessed portion J of the rail I. The plate L is also provided with a slot, N. 0 represents a handle-piece comprising a body portion, which has depending arms P at each end and at right angles thereto. The lower end of each arm P is provided with a head, Q, which abuts against the plate L and prevents the handle from being removed when said plate is secured to the rail.
In attaching this handle to the top rail the recess J and mortises K are first formed in the rail. The handle 0 is then placed in position upon the rail, the arms entering the mortises. The plate is then arranged upon the rail and secured thereto.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the rail of a sash or blind provided with parallel mortises B B, of a plate secured to said rail and formed with perforations which register with the mortises B B, and a handle consisting of a handle proper, E, and parallel arms, which latter are provided at their ends with stops which cannot pass through the perforations in the plate after said plate is secured, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB B. HARTMAN.
