To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIMON OHEMIENES, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at St. Clairsville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to knives or similar implements, and has for its object to provide a knife which cannot be opened or closed except by special manipulation of the parts thereof.

The invention will serve to prevent the unauthorized opening of the knife when closed, and also serve to prevent closing of the blade, and consequently possible injury, when opened.

The invention is also serviceable in connection with daggers and similar weapons.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the knife closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same opened; Fig. 3 is a front edge view with the blade open Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of oppo site sides of the knife with the same in partly open position.

The handle of the knife is composed of two separate or independent parts each of which comprises a metal plate 6 with a grip 7 of wood or other material fastened thereto. These parts are pivoted together by means of a pivot 8 connecting the front ends of the plates 6. A spacing block 9 is fixed to the rear end of one of the plates, and this block is provided with a notch 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.

The shank of the blade 11 is fixed between the halves of the handle by the pivot 8, said shank being indicated at 12, and on opposite sides of this shank are projections 13 and 14 which are located on diametrically opposite sides of the pivot. These projections are adapted to engage in and stop against the ends of notches 15 and 16 made in the handle plates 6 on opposite, sides of the pivot 8. When the knife is swung to full open or closed position the said projections strike or stop against the edge of the plates in the notches, and inasmuch as the projections are located on opposite sides of the blade and on opposite sides of the pivot, the blade cannot turn in either direction unless one of the handle sections is also turned therewith. in the block 9, or to be disengaged therefrom, as the part 17 is slid in or out. A spring catch 21 is also pivoted in the recess of the hollow section of the handle, in position to engage with its hooked head in a notch 22 in said shank 17. The tail of this catch or detent projects beyond the edge of the handle, as indicated at 23.

In order to open the knife it is necessary to first press in on the tail 23 of the detent to disengage its head from the notch 22, said detent being pressed by a spring 24. The slide 17 may then be pulled out to a certain extent by pressure of the finger on the part 18, disengaging the tongue 19 from the notch 10. Then the two handle sections may be turned with respect to each other, on the pivot 8, together with the blade which also turns on said pivot until it reaches the full open position at which time the projections13 and 14 engage in the handle plates and prevent further turn of the knife. I/Vhen one handle section is swung completely around with respect to the other, and brought in opposite relation thereto, the

slide 17 is pushed in, causing its tongue 19 to engage in the notch 10 thereby locking the two parts of the handle together and also looking the blade in open position. To close the blade the reverse operation is performed. That is, the slide 17 is pulled out and one handle section is turned around with respect to the other, carrying with it the blade 11, until said blade resumes its closed position and the handle sections are again in position to lock the same together.

In consequence of the construction shown and described it is impossible to either close or open the knife without unlocking the handle sections, and the locking devices are sufficiently intricate to prevent a child, for

example, opening the knife, and when the knife is in actual use there is no danger of the blade closing on the hand of the user.

I claim:

1. A bladed implement comprising a handle formed in two sections pivoted together at the front end, one of the sections having a notched spacing block at the rear end, a blade pivoted between the front ends of the sections, and a slide movable lengthwise in one of the handle sections and having a finger piece at the front end and a locking tongue at the rear end, oflset toward the other section and engageable in the notch to prevent pivotal movement of the section.

2. A bladed implement comprising a handle formed in two sections pivoted together at the front end, one section being recessed at the rear end, a blade pivoted between the sections, and a slide movable lengthwise in said recessed handle section and having a finger piece at the front end and a locking tongue at the rear end engageable with the other section to prevent pivotal movement, and a catch located in the recess in the rear end of said handle section and engageable with the slide to hold the same in retracted position, with the tongue engaged, the catch having a projection exposed at the rear end of said handle section.
