Be it known that I, DANIEL Ronnnn, a. citizen of Canada, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives; and i do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pocket knives, and it relates more specifically to an improved safety or locking-blade knife.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved knife of this character which eliminates every possibility of the blade being accidentally closed while in use, but to enable it to be very easily opened by proper manipulation of a releasing or lock-controlling element, the latter being also useful as a tool element.

Another object is to provide a device of this character comprising very few and simple parts, so that the knife may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.

Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons who read the following details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, the section being taken only through the several pintles which hold the parts together and perform other useful functions.

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except that the locking blade is in its unlocked position and the locking element has been moved to its unlocking position, the lockcontrolling element being in the position to permit the locking element to be held by its spring action in the unlocking position.

Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view, but the parts being in the unlocked and closed position.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating my improved spring-locking lever detached.

Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, and in which the handle 11 and blade 1.2, as illustrated, are identical with those of my co-pending application for Specification of Letters Patent.

The invention consists in the combination of these elements with tne locking element 13 (illustrated separately in Fig. i) and the combined blade and cam 1d, the latter being pivotally connected to the handle 11 at 15 and comprising a useful tool element as well.as an actuating or controlling element for the improved locking element or member 13. The member 13 is pivotally connected at 16, at its middle portion, to the middle portion of the handle 11. One end of the lever 13 is formed with a blade-engaging element 17 which engages in a notch 18 of the blade 12 for lockin the latter. The other end of the locking member or lever 13 is provided with a cam-engaging surface 19 against which a cam 20 of the member 1a slides when the latter is swung on its pivot 15. The lever 13 is formed with an unlocking spring 21 which bears on a pintle or abutment 22 and constantly tends to move the blade-engaging element 17 out of the blade-locking position. However, when the blade 1% is closed, as illustrated in F 1g. 1, its cam 20 overcomes the pressure of the spring 21 so as to move and hold the lever 13 with its locking element 17 in engagement with the blade 12. The lever 13 is inherently springy and exerts a spring action against the cam 20 and against the shank of the blade 12 to hold these mebers 12 and l l in the closed. position illustrated in Fig. 3, it being understood that the blade is mounted to swing to its open and closed positions on a pivot 23.

Although I have described this embodiment of my invention very specifically. it is not intended to limit this invention to these exact details of construction and arrangement, but changes may be made within the scope of the inventive idea as described and claimed herein.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is:

l. The combination in a pocket-knife, of a blade, a blade-locking element movable into and out of locking engagement with said blade, and elastic means carried by the blade locking element and engaging an abutment to move said blade-locking element out of its blade-locking engagement.

2. The combination in a pocket-knife,

comprising a handle, of a cutting-blade pivoted in one end of the handle, a camlever pivoted in the other end of the handle, a locking strip extending longitudinally in the handle and having one end engaging the cam lever and the other extended for engagement With the cutting lolade the end portion engaging the cam lever being split to provide a spring element, and an abutment against which a spring element or" said locking strip presses to yieldably retain the locking strip in engagement with the cam lever and normally out of engagement With the cutting blade.
