ATENT lFE.
SPECKIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,513, dated December 24, 1901. Application filed September 28, 1900. $e1ia1 No. 31,369. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT PAPENDELL, a
subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to knives, and has for its special object to produce a pocket-knife of the pivoted-blade type whose blade can be readily opened by means of a pivoted fin gerpiece at the end of the knife-handle.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in several views a knife embodying my invention.
Figure l is a sectional side view of the knife, the section being taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the knife, showing the blade being swung open by the pivoted finger-piece. Fig. 3 shows the knife closed. Fig. 4 is a section on line" 4. 4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, a, a represent the sides of the handle, held together by the usual pivots or pins b b. The blade-spring c is shown as carriedby a pin cl, which in the case of a knife having two or more blades, within which term I also desire to include nail-files and other small tools, is preferably located intermediate the ends of the handle. Suitable blades e f are pivotally carried upon the pivots b b. In this instance I have shown the blades e as provided with a squared heel g, which cooperates with the spring 0, which is preferably recessed at c to receive the end of a blade-opening finger piece h, which swings freely on the pivot-pin b of the blade 6. This finger piece is adapted to abut against a pin or abutment't', which projects laterally from the heel of the knife-blade. To swing the blade out of the handle, it is only necessary to press downward on the finger-piece to lift the blade into such a position as to carry the same past the dead-point, whereupon the spring will throw the blade into an upright position, where it will remain stationary until it is forced back by hand into line with the handle in the-ordinary manner. By locating the abutment on the side of the heel of the blade I am enabled to throw the blade up by the finger-piece alone sufficiently far to bring it past the dead-point and bring the blade-spring into action.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. In a pocket-knife, the combination of a handle provided with a blade-spring, a blade pivotally carried by said handle and having a lateral abutment t' on the heel thereof and a blade-opening finger-piece alongside the blade carried by the pivot of the blade and acting upon the abutment on the blade.
2. The improved knife having a handle, pivotal pin and blade, a lug or pintle at the side of the blade, and a lever fulerumed on the pin and adapted to be pressed on the lug orpintle to open the blade.
ROBERT PAPENDELL.
