Be it known that 1, JOHN P. CRAVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth city, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Picks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to miners picks and has for an object to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive pick which will have the detachable points that are secured in place without the use of set screws or other similar fasteners.

A further object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple means for so securing the detachable points that the same may be applied or released by simply rotating the pick handle.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that will be strong and durable and will be formed of a few parts that will not easily get out of order. I

Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates the pick head which is provided with a threaded central opening 11 to receive the reduced threaded end 12 of a cylindrical metal handle 13 that is provided with a wood grip 14: or other suitable grip. At the base of the threaded end 12 of the handle there exists an annular shoulder 15 the purpose of which will presently appear.

Formed in each end of the head is an opening 16 which loosely receives the cylindrical stem 17 of a cutting point 18, and also formed in the head at right angles to the opening 16 at each end of the head is a key opening 19 which communicates with the opening 16 and opens through that edge of thehead next adjacent to the handle, these key openings 19 being disposed on opposite sides of the handle as shown.

The device for removably securing the points 18 in position is carried by and operated by the handle, and consists of a resilient cross arm 20 having a centrally disposed opening 21 to receive the threaded end 12 of the handle, and having integral up-turned key lugs 22 at the ends adapted to enter the openings 19 in the head and bear against the stems 17 of the points 18. The cross arm bears against the above described shoulder 15 on the handle, and when the handle is advanced into the head this shoulder forces the resilient cross arm toward the head with a resultant urging of the key lugs against the stems of the points whereby the latter are firmly held against escape from the head. Upon retracting the handle by unscrewing two or three turns more or less, the tension of the cross arm will be relieved whereby the key lugs release the points for removal.

From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple tool of the class described which will be formed of a few parts that will not easily get out of order. It will furthermore be seen that the removable points are secured in position without the use of set screws or similar fasteners, and further that by simply screwing the handle forward or back in the head the points may be firmly secured against escape or released for removal, such operation requiring minimum time and minimum manual exertion.
