J. H. WUNDES.
TOOL HANDLE;
No. 429,223. Patented June 3. 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HENRY WUNDES, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO EZRA F. BOWVMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,223, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed March 5, 1890. Serial No. 342,736. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY \VUNDES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the tain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view, partly broken away, of the devices embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective detail View of the blade; Fig. 3, a perspective detail view of the fastening-sleeve, and Fig. 4 a detail view of the toothed strip.
A designates the tapering handle, provided at its large end with a head a; b, the longitudinal groove in said handle and triangular in cross-section. In the bottom of said groove, near said head, is placed a metallic strip 0, having a series of teeth 0' on its outer surface. The rectangular blade B has a point (1 at one end, and has a recess (1 near said point and on the under side of said blade. Said recess allows said blade to pass over all teeth except the one with which said point engages.
The longitudinally-slit tapering sleeve C,when applied, holds the blade in position.
When the tool is to be used, the rectangular blade is placed in the groove 1), with the point aforesaid resting against any one of the teeth. Said blade then has two of its sides in the groove and two out. Therefore when the tapering spring-sleeve O is fitted on the tapering handle A and pushed well up the two sides of said sleeve push firmly against the two outside sides of said blade, and thereby hold it firmly in said groove and against one of said teeth, which prevents its slipping.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an engravers tool, the combination of a grooved handle,a series of teeth set in said groove, a blade so constructed as to engage with said teeth, and a fastening device to hold said blade in said groove and in engagement with said teeth, all substantially as set forth.
2. In an engravers tool, the combination of a grooved tapering handle, a series of teeth set in said groove, a blade so constructed as to engage with said teeth, and a slit tapering sleeve to fit over said handle and hold said blade in place, all substantially as set forth.
3. In an engravers to0l,the combination of a grooved tapering handle, a series of teeth set in said groove, a blade having a point at one end and a recess near said point, and a slit tapering sleeve, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HENRY WUN DES.
