COMBINATION HAMMER AND NAIL-FULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
Application filed March 22, 1911. Serial No. 616,126.
0 all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, JVILLIAM A. DAY, a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Bellingham, in the county of \Vhatcom and State of \Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Hammers and N ail-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a hannner for driving nails and the like into material and provided with means for withdrawing nails from material.
To obtain the desired result, use is made of a hammer head attached to a handle, a shoulder integrally formed on one side of the hammer and a toothed eccentric mounted on the hammer adjacent the said shoulder. so that when it is desired to remove a nail from a piece of material, the said nail is received between the said shoulder and the said toothed eccentric, so that the eccentric will grip the nail, thus permitting of removing the same from the material by exerting a pull on the handle of the hammer;
Aside from performing the function of pulling nails and other securing members from material, my device embodies a hammer similar to the usual hammers now in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which r I igure 1 is a side elevation of my device showing the same applied to a board to disengage a nail therefrom. Fig. 2 is a plan view.' Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 in Fig. 2. v
Referring inore particularly to the views,
I employ a hammer head- 10 provided with arriap'erture ll adaptcd to receive a handle l2,f=the said hall 1111101, head 10 having one end, 13 'thereo fhdap'ted for hammering and the other end 14 bifurcated to form a slot 15.
Ftn'medon one side of the hammer head 10 is a shoulder 16 and adjacent the said shoulder :1 toothed eccentric 1.7 is revolubly mounted. the said eccentric being shaped like a wheel and turnable so that one side thcrcol can be moved imlnet liately adjacent the end ot" the shoulder lti.
In the application of my device when it is desired to withdraw a nail from a bar 18, as shown in Fig. 3, the protruding end of the nail is received between the shoulder 16 and the eccentric 17 and the Qtfitfitillll'lt) is then turned so that the teeth thereon will grip the nail, after which a pull is exerted on the hammer so that the nail will he \\'ithdrawn from the bar 18, the end l/l ot the hammer being adapted as a fulcrum when it is desired to withdraw the nail from the board.
It will be understood that aside from providing a nail puller, my hammer can he used in the usual manner for hammering nails and the like into a material, and it will. be lnrther understood that the scope ol the inrention is dclined in the appended claims.
[laving thus fully described the invention,
what I claim as new, 1s:--
