CARPENTERS IMPLEMENT OR TOOL- Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Patented March 13, 1906.
Application filed October 14,1905. Serial No. 282,738-
To all whom; it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLELL D. CAMPBELL, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Lin coln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful Carpenters Implement or Tool, of
which the following is a specification sufliciently clear to enable those skilled in the art straightening or twisting joist, studding, or
other materials; second, theproduction of a convenient and practical car enters and builder's tool for drawing nai s, including those toe-nailed in studding and also including all sizes of nails and spikes, with ease of operation and a minimum of damage to the.
lumber and also with comparatively no damage to the nail or spike drawn; third, the roduction of a carpenters tool one end of W 'ch maybe used as an ordinary pinchbar for starting or loosening window and door casin s, studding, joist, and flooring,
&c., the ot er end of such construction as to tear the loosened lumber from its-fastenings with great economy of time, labor, and niaterials. These purposesare attained in my invention by certain novel construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings.
Figure A is a perspectiveview of the implement. Fig. B is a similar view showing my implement intwo parts, shortening the length of the drawing about one-half for convenience in showing same in the Ofiicial Gazette.-
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts My device comprises a handle-bar formed with a bend or curve, as shown at 4, and having a transverse inte ral head terminating at one side ofthe hand e-bar in a pair of small claws 2, having a curved outer fulcrum-surface terminating at the other end in apair of large claws 3 on the opposite side of the handle-bar and having in its inner surface and between the claws 3 and the handle-bar a substantially rectangular recess 1, adapted to engage the corners of a stud, joist, or other beam. Said handle-bar terminates at its other end in an ordinary pinch-bar 5.
With my invention a piece of studding that is twisted may be nailed securely in its roger place at one end, this implement 00 ed onto the other end twisting the studding until straight and holding same until securely nailed in its proper position. Where a studding has beennailed out of line, with this tool 'a portion orall the nails may be drawn and with the hook or grip the studding twisted straight with the greatest of case. As wreckin -too1 two of these im lements may be used withgreat advantage or twisting studding loose with great speed and small damage to the lumber, In drawing toe-nails from studding and like work the short claw is pressed or driven under the nail-head, so that a power applied to the handle will start the nall sufliciently to permit it being seized and pulled completely out with the large claw, the construction of the'large claw being such that the fulcrum changes, moving farther from the nail as it is being drawn, thus preventing largely the bending or breaking of the nail or excessive marring of the wood.
The end of the handle is fashioned into the sha e of an ordinary pinch bar for starting an loosening door and window sills and casings, flooring, &c., so as to permit the big claw to be inserted under and tear them from their fastenin s completely with economy of time, 'materia s, and labor.
Imake this implement oftool-steel preferably, though any suitable .material or combinations of materials may be used.
1. A combined nail-extractor and beamadjusting tool comprising a handle-bar hav ing anintegral transverse head having an outer face. curved to provide a rocking fulfrom one side of saidhandle-bar and having on its inner face at the other side of said handle-bar a substantially rectangular recess adapted to engage around the corners of a beam.
2. A combined nail-extractor and beam adjusting tool comprising a handle-bar hav ing an integral transverse head having an outer face curved to provide a rocking ful- I crum and having at one end claws projecting crum and having at one end claws projecting In testimony whereof I have signed my from one side of said handle-bar and having name to this specification in the presence of on its inner face at the other side of the two subscribi gwitnesses. handlebar a substantially rectangular recess I CLELL D. CAMPBELL.
