CARPENTER'S TOOL.

JOHN' M. FIORI, 0F IPOUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
CARPENTERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed August 22, 1917. Serial No. 187,529.
To all whom t may Concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. FIORI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Poughkeepsie, county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpenters Tools, of which the followiner is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in carpenters tools.
It frequently happens that in the course of building or repairing a carpenter wishes to drive a nail in a corner or other constricted space, or above convenient reach, where considerable difliculty is met with in properly holding the nail for starting.
It also frequently happens that, in driving nails, and particularly cut nails, if the body of the nail is not kept parallel with the grain of the wood, the wood will be split.
My invention has for its object to provide means for holding a nail for starting, in a constricted space difficult of access to the hand or fingers, or above convenient reach, and means for holding a nail while it is being driven so that its body will be maintained parallel to the grain of the wood; at the same time to provide means for readily setting the nail after it has been driven down with the hammer.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, on which I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure l is a plan view of my improved tool.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a cut nail.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the subject of Fig. 2.
L'Ihe body of the tool, preferably made of hardened steel, is provided with the short nail set point a and the long nail set point Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the c, the points a and o being of diiierent sizes convenient for general use. Opposite the points a and c respectively are the impact heads b and d. The flat spring c is fastened at one end to the body and extends toward the impact head b, lying ad] acent'to the side of the head.
Between the impact heads b and al, the slot f is cut into the body.
In practice, if it is desired to start a nail in a constricted space or above convenient reach, the nail is placed between the spring e and the side of the impact head b, where it is firmly held by the pressure of the spring. The tool is then held by the long point and the nail placed at the point where it is desired to drive it; the nail may thus be readily started with the hammer and the tool removed out lof the way, when the driving of the nail may be completed.
If it is desired to drive a cut nail parallel or otherwise to the grain of the wood, the nail is properly started, and the tool held so that the nail is embraced near its head in the slot f, the nail may then be positively prevented from turning or twisting, while being driven, by holding the tool firmly.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is- A carpenters tool, comprising a nail set having two driving points, two corresponding impact receiving heads, the edge of the tool connecting the impact receiving heads extending obliquely to the longitudinal and transverse extensions of the tool, and a slot formed in the body of the tool and opening along said obliquely extending head.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Poughkeepsie, on this 8th day of August, 1917.
