JOSEPH W. OLNEY, 0F LATAH, WASHINGTON.
HATCHET.
Application filed September 10, ,1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH WV. OLNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Latah, in the county of Spokane, State of \Vashington, have invented a new and useful Hatchet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved combination lathing hatchet, hammer and extracting claws therefor, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide improved extracting claws reversely disposed on opposite sides of the body of the hatchet head.
A further object of the invention is to provide claws of this kind, so arranged that a carpenter may use the claws for ripping laths or clapboards, or use the claws for adjusting the laths or ciapboards in position.
-A further object of the invention is the provision of improved claws, the opposite walls of the bifurcation of each claw having means to be engaged by a nail-head for holding the nail for starting the nail, so that the carpenter may reach a good distance above his head, or a good distance below when reaching over some object, so as to start and drive the nail home with the one hand. One claw may be used for starting the nail above the head, the other claw to be used for starting the nail when reaching below.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved lathing hatchet constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fi 2.
Fieferring more especially to the drawing, 1 designates a handle, to which by means of a suitable securing wedge 2, the body 3 of a hatchet head is secured. Projecting from one face of the body is a conventional form of hammer poll 4 provided with a Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 253,438.
hammer end 5, Projecting from the opposite face of the body carrying the poll t is a hatchet blade 5 provided with a cutting edge 6. One edge of the blade 5 has a notch 7 for'engagement with the shank of a nail below its head for extracting the same. Projecting from and formed integral with opposite side faces of the body 3 are nail extracting claws 8 and 9, which are reversely disposed. For instance, the claw 8 curves and extends rearwardly in the direction of the handle, and the claw 9 curves and extends forwardly from the handle. The crotch portions 10 and 11 of the claws are designed to engage laths or clapboards for holding them in place while the other hand of the user is being used for other purposes. The claws 8 and 9 may be used for ripping clapboards, laths, and the like. The curved portion 10 of the claw 8 is designed to engage a clapboard when being hung below the waist line, and the curved portion 11 is designed to engage a. clapboard when hung over the head. Each claw 8 and 9 is provided with the usual bifurcation 12, for the reception of a shank of a nail when extracting the same, while the head of the nail engages adj acentthe curves 10 or 11. The opposite walls 13 of the bifurcation of each claw are provided with grooves 14, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, for the reception of the head a of the nail b, for supporting the nail whereby it may be started prior to driving the same home. It is to be noted that the claw 9 may support a nail when starting the same overhead, while the claw 8 supports a nail for starting the same below the waist.
The claw 9 extends toward the end of the body member 3 and terminates in a sharpened edge substantially in alinement with the end face of the body and spaced therefrom, the sharpened edge forming a fulcruming point during a nail pulling operation. The fulcruming point during a nail extracting operation being at a point remote from the nail extracting claws will allow the nail to be quickly extracted with a mini-- mum amount of bending of the nail. The sharpened edge of the claw 9 will prevent the slipping of the head of the tool during a nail extracting operation.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is In a device as set forth, a body, a handle Patented May 18, 1920.
therefor, said body having on its opposite faces integral nail-extracting claws reversely disposed in relation to each other, one of said claws extending toward the 5 handle member and being adapted to receive the head of a nail, the other claw extending toward the end of the body member and terminating in a sharpened edge substantially in alinement with the end of said body 10 member and spaced therefrom thereby forming a fulcruming point during a nailpulling operation.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH W. OLNEY.
