Description

c 0. mm. LATHiNG HATCHET,
APPLICATION HLED APR.30.1917- Patented Jan. 8, 1918.
W W a CHARLES C. RIGHT, OF SPARTA, GEORGIA.
LATHING-HATCHET.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 8, 1918.
Application filed April 30, 1917. Serial No. 165,571.
To a l h m it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES O. Hronr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of Hancock, State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Lathing-Hatchet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved combination lathing hatchet and hammer, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide improved nail extracting claws integrally carried by the body of the hatchet and adjacent the hammer poll.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, etlicient and practical device of this kind, which may be manufactured at a small cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
As a further object of the invention it is the aim to provide nail extracting claws so connected to the body of the hatchet, and so disposed with relation to the hammer poll, that one or more pulls may be imparted to the nail to extract the same.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling with in the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set fortlnshown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l is a view in side elevation of the combination hatchet and hammer and extractor, showing the initial engagement of the claws with a nail or the like, whereby it may be extracted, using a part of the hammer poll as a fulcruming means.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, showing the tool as having partly t'ulcrumed on the poll and the nail partly extracted.
In Fig. 3 there is illustrated a perspective view clearly showing how the combined hatchet and hammer may be used for imparting a second pull on the nail, in order to Complete the extraction.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the combined lathing hatchet and ha mmcr, and 2 the blade (which is integral with the body) having a cutting edge The body is provided with an opening t, in which the handle 5 is secured in any suitable manner. Projecting laterally from the body is a hammer poll 6, which extends in an opposite direction to the blade 2. This hammer poll may be any suitable construction or configuration, and has its nail engaging surface 7 disposed in a plane parallel with the handle 5. Also extending from the body 1 adjacent the hammer poll in a direction substantially corresponding to the poll, is an elongated projection 8, which extends laterally from the poll, and curves in a direction substantially with the plane of the handle and terminates in a nail extracting claw 9. The claw 9 is provided with a tapering slot 10, the provision of which causes the formation of the forks 11 of said claw. The outer faces 12 of the forks 11, particularly adjacent their extremities, are substantially alined with the nail engaging face 7 of the hammer poll, as shown in Fig. 1 clearly, whereby the shank of the nail, immediately below its head, as shown at 13, may engage the slot 10, by having passed through the open end 14 of the slot. By so constructing said fore going parts, the lathing hatchet may fulcrum upon the marginal corner of the hammer poll, as shown at 15, in Fig. 2, whereby an initial pull may be imparted to the nail for partly extracting the same. The inner surfaces of the forks, particularly adjacent the slot 10, are scooped or cut out, as shown at 16, for the reception of the head of the nail. If desired, after the nail has been partly extracted, (not quite as much as shown in Fig. 2) the lathing hatchet may be so manipulated that the shank of the nail may engage the slot further toward its crotch, whereby a severe wrenching action may be imparted to the tool for extracting the nail without fulcruming on the hammer poll.
By carefully examining the drawings, it is to be observed that the projection 8 is so arranged relative to the poll 6 as to form a substantially tapering curved opening, space or slot 17, into which the shank of the nail may enter suliiciently as to engage the crotch 18 of said space or opening, whereby a second pull may be imparted to the nail so as to complete its extraction, as shown in Fig. 3 clearly. This second pull on the nail may be attained by placing some suitable means, as shown in dotted lines under the body of the tool, after which either an upward movement or a twisting movement may be imparted to the handle, thereby removing the nail.
From the foregoing, it is to be observed that an elticient and practical tool orlathing hatchet and extractor has been devlsed, and one that the uses of which may be varied.
The invention having been set forth, What is claimed as new and useful, is
In a device as set forth, a body, a handle therefor, said body having a. claw extending laterally and curved toward thehand gripping part of the handle, said body having a hammer poll extending therefrom, and on which, the tool may fulcrum, whereby the claw may impart an initial pull on the nail, said poll so extending from the body with C LES O HIGHT.
