Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT F. STREET, OF ROCKVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES F. DOEBLER, OF SAME PLACE.
HAMMER.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,776, dated July 14, 1891.
Application filed November 25, 1889. Renewed December 27, 1890. Serial No. 375,992. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. STREET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockville, in the county of Tolland and State of 5 Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hammers; and the main obj ect of myimprovelo ments is to draw a nail without marring the work from which it is drawn.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my hammer, a portion of the handle being broken off. Fig. 2 is a I 5 rear elevation thereof, the handle being shown in section on line 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my hammer on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the same, and Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a portion of my hammer with the drawing-jaws set to one side of the middle.
A designates the hammer-head, and B the handle. The general form of the head'is the same as that of the ordinary claw-hammer.
In drawing a nail with the ordinarycurved claws 6 6 the hammer is often rocked far enough to bring the corner of the face 8 in contact with the face of the work, when, upon .a furtherdepression of the handle, said cor- 0 nor acts as the fulcrum and is indented into the wood. I therefore provide the face end of the hammer-head with drawing-jaws 9 9 at a point between the eye for the handle and the face 8. v I form said jaws in the walls of 3 5 a recess in the head, the jaws being formed at the back or face of the head on the side farthest from the handle, so that the back or outside of the hammer-head, that serves as the rest when a nail is being pulled with the claws 6 6, will also serve as the restwhen a nail is being pulled with the drawing-jaws 9 9. In the latter case there will be no angular corner on the resting-surface of the hammer, the whole length of said surface being rounded or curved, so as not to indent or deface the work. Furthermore. a better leverage will be obtained, so as to make it possible to draw a nail which sticks so firmly that it could not be drawn with the ordinary claw without straining or breaking the handle.
While I prefer in all cases to have the claw end divided into a pair of claws, as shown, it is evident that the drawing-jaws may be used in the manner described in any hammer-head having at its back or outside face the rounded form of an ordinary claw-hammer, substantially as shown.
I prefer to form the drawing-jaws 9 9 in the middle, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; but, if desired, they may be formed on one side of the middle, as shown in Fig. 5.
I claim as my invention A hammer having its back or outside face in the rounded form of an ordinary claw-hammer and the drawing-jaws 9 9 at a point between the hammer-face and the eye for the handle, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
