CARPENTERS HAMMER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,989, dated March 21, 1893.

To aZZwhom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWIN G. DURYEA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverhead, in the county of Suffolk and State of New ,York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters I-Iammers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1, represents a perspective View of my improved hammer in position to make the first draw on a long nail. Fig. 2, shows the application of the extra claw on the nail partially drawn.

My invention relates to a carpenters hammer.

It has for its object to provide the ordinary claw hammer with integral or removable auxiliary claws whereby nails partially withdrawn by the main claws, may be entirely drawn by the auxiliary claws, without bending the nail and reducing to a minimum the liability of straining or breaking the handle.

It consists in certain features of construct-ion and combination of parts which will be hereinafter set forth.

In the said drawings I have disclosed my improvement as applied to a well known form of hammer, in which A is the handle, B the head, I) to c the front thereof,0 the claw and D the eye or socket in which the handle is secured.

With the hammers now in general use, a nail cannot be drawn without curving or bending it, and also without subjecting the hammer handle to severe strain, the strain being so great, when drawing long nails, as tooften cause the handle to break.

In carrying out my invention I employ an 'upon the handle.

Having thus explained my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A hammer provided with a main and an auxiliary claw one being set farther back from the front of the hammer than the other, whereby nails partially withdrawn by one may be entirely drawn by the other claw, substantially as herein described.
