Description

UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE;
BOUGHTON T. NOBLE, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
SCREW-DRIVER OR KINDRED TOOL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 680,065, dated August 6, 1901. Application filed March 5, 1901. Serial No. 9,906. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BOUGHTON T. NOBLE,
of Southington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new 5 Improvement in Screw-Drivers or Kindred Tools; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a transverse sectional view of a tool embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the headed plug detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in screw-drivers and kindred articles-such as chisels, gouges, and other tools where it is desirable on occasions to strike upon the outer end of the handle-and particularly to tools of this class having a tang extending into the handle, the object of the invention being to provide a metal plug which shall extend into the handle and bear upon the tang of the tool and overlap the outer end of the handle, whereby a blow imparted to the outer end of the handle will be imparted directly to the inner end of the implement; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
The handle A may be of any approved shape, but formed with a longitudinal recess B, into which the tang C of a screw-driver, chisel, gouge, or other implement D will extend in the usual manner, the said tang preferably having a blunt end, as shown. This tang may be retained in its place by friction, but preferably will be held by a pin D, extending transversely through the usual ferrule E and through the tang. Into the outer end of the handle a plug F is inserted, said plug corresponding to the recess in the handle, and preferably formed with a square end, adapted to bear upon the inner end of the tang C. The outer end of this plug is formed with a head G, corresponding in shape to the shape of the outer end of the handle, so as to stand substantially flush therewith, The plug may fit the recess in the handle so tightly as to be held in position by friction, but if necessary or desirable a pin H may be passed transversely through the handle and through the plug, as shown. With a plug of this character resting directly on the tang blows may be struck upon the head and be imparted to the tool Without danger of splitting or mutilating the end of the handle, which is protected by the said head. The head also forms a neat finish for the end of the handle and adds to rather than-detracts from the appearance of the tool.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A screw-driver or kindred tool having a tang, a handle having a longitudinal recess into which the tang extends, and a plug inserted into the outer end of the handle and against the inner end of said tang, and a head at the outer end of said plug overlappingthe end of the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib= ing witnesses. v
BOUGHTON '1. NOBLE.
