Description

PATENT'ED SEPT. 26, 1905.
A. J. KITSON. ATTACHMENT FOR HAMMERS.
1 APPLICATION FILED JAN. 21, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ARTHUR J. KITSON, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
I 'ATTACHMENT FOR H AMIVIERS. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1905.
Application filed January 21,1905. Serial No, 242,139.
i To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. KITSON, a citizen of the United States,-residing at, Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Ham-- mers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in. the
art to which it appertains to make and use the.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction, which ,Will be hereinafter fully described and. then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspectiveview showing my improved device as applied to the head of a hammer; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the hammer-head, showing the device applied thereto.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates thehead of a'hammer of the usual construction, to
which a handle B is secured.
E is a bufler which has a cylindrical portion adapted to fit over the hammer, as shown,
and a projecting strip F has a flat portion, whereby the device may be securely held to the end ofthe'handle,as shown in the drawings, by means of screws. The buffer when applied to the hammer-head should project a slight distance beyond the head of the hammer, whereby as a nail is driven by the hammer the parts about the wood through which the nail is driven will be protected from the blows of the hammer.
When it is desired to remove the buffer from the hammer, the projecting portion is first released from the handle, after which the cylindrical portion of the buffer may be easily drawn from ofi the head of the hammer.
While I have shown a particular detailed form of buffer, it will be understood that I may vary the shape of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ,.A buffer for hammers comprising a flexible-sleeve adaptcd to fit over the head of a hammer and provided with a projecting portion adapted to engage the handle of the hammer, as set forth.
t 2. A buffer attachment for hammers comprising a flexible sleeve adapted to fit over the head of a hammer and having a projecting portion, fastening means passing through said projecting portion and engaging said handle, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. ARTHUR J. KITSON.
