ABRAHAM M. AMBERG, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
BOX-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Application filed October 26, 1907. Serial No. 399,295.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM M. AMBERG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Ra ids, in the county of Kent and State of l\ ichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in box fasteners, and its object is to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1. represents a box having my improved fasteners applied thereto; Fig. 2. a sectional detail of the same; Fig. 3. a perspective detail of one of the fasteners; and, Fig. 4. the same of a modified form.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents any suitable box to which my device may be applied. 2 is the cover of the same secured by my improved fastener. These fasteners consist of a central member 3 in the form of a nail adapted to be driven through the cover and into the edge of the side or end of the box in the manner of an ordinary nail. Oppositely projecting radially and at right angles from the head of the member 3 are two arms 4 and 5, preferably made of a piece of wire welded to the head of the member 3 (the arm 4 being somewhat shorter and adapted to extend inward upon the cover and the arm 5 adapted to be bent downward over the corner of the same and extended upon the outer surface of the box,) each of these arms being provided with a spur 8 at right angles thereto and ada ted to be driven into the material of the 0x. These arms and spurs thus afiord additional means of securing the box cover in place and co-act with the nail for this purpose. The arm 5 also being bent over the corner of the cover tends to protect the same.
In some cases especially for inserting in the end of the boards, I prefer to use additional arms 6 and 7 preferably of equal length and arranged at right angles to the arms 4 and 5 and in the same plane and also provided with spurs 8 which enter the cover at the respective sides of the nail and furnish additional fastening means particularly adapted to prevent splitting of the cover by the nail when driven mto the same.
This fastener is applied by means of a hammer, first driving the nail ortion through the cover into the side or on of the box and the spurs on the arms that engage the cover into the same and then bending the long arm 5 down over the edge of the cover to a vertical position and driving the spur 8 thereon into the side or end of the box.
What I claim is:
l. A box fastener, comprising a nailshaped member, oppositely projecting arms extending radially and at right angles from the head of the said member, and spurs extending at right angles from the ends of said arms and parallel with said member.
2. A box fastener, comprising a nailshaped member, four equi-distant arms projecting radially from the head of said member and at right angles thereto, one of said arms being longer than the other arms and adapted to be bent downward parallel with said member, and spurs projecting laterally from the ends of the respective arms and parallel with said member.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABRAHAM M. AMBERG.
Witnesses:
GEORGIANA OHAoE, LUTHER V. MoUL'roN.
