Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910.
Application filed May 20, 1909. Serial No. 497,212.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, HENRY J. BOYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubois, in the county of Clearfield, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to carpet holders and more particularly to the class of holders for use for connecting av carpet to the steps of a dwelling house or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a carpet holder which will securely fasten or hold a carpet in position upon the steps of a stair case without the necessity or use of tacks, nails or other fasteners.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a carpet holder which is capable of being readily and quickly mounted in position upon steps, to secure stair carpet thereto, and that may be readily and easily detached when it is desired to remove the stair carpet from the steps without injury to the carpet.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a carpet holder which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, one that can be stamped or otherwise formed from a single piece of material, thus making the same inexpensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred forms of embodiment of the invention, to enable those skilled in the art to carry the same into practice, and as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of steps of a stairway with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view 011 the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the holder, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a modification. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 6 designates the steps of a stairway which are of the ordinary and well known construction, having laid upon the same a stair carpet 7 which may be of any desirable character.
The carpet holder comprises a member 8, the same being in the form of an elongated strip made of a single piece of fiat metal although it may be constructed of any other suitable material provided near one terminal thereof with a barb 9, which latter is out from the body of the material of the member and extends at right angles from the face thereof, so that it may be driven through the carpet into the step 6, at the tread thereof for securing the carpet 7 to the same.
Formed at the opposite end of the member 8, is a widened head terminal 10, the latter being provided with inwardly converging slits near opposite edges thereof, to provide spaced alining barbs 11, bent at right angles to the head terminal 10, in alinement with each other and these barbs are adapted to be forced through the carpet 7, into the riser of the step 6 to secure the said carpet thereto, and to hold the same when laid in a smooth condition upon the stairway.
In Figs. i and 5 there is shown a slight modification in which the member 8 is formed with a single spike 12, riveted at one end thereof, and projecting at right angles to one face of the same while the head terminal 10 is provided with a pair of spikes 18, disposed in alinement with each other and riveted t0 the said head terminal 10, to project at right angles from the same. In riveting the spikes to the member 8, there are formed heads 14, at the opposite outer face of the member to present a neat appearance to the same when the holders are in use for securing the carpet 7, to the step 6, of a stairway.
What is claimed is As an article of manufacture, a carpet holder comprising an elongated member with enlarged terminals, one of said termi- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, nals being bent at right anglesto the said in presence of two Witnesses. member, spaced non-detachable spurs on the HENRY J BOYER right angular terminal and projecting from i one face thereof and a single spur rigid With Witnesses:
the other terminal and projecting from one JET KEARNS, face thereof. W. L. 'CALKINS.
