Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1966;
Application filed August 10, 1905. Serial No. 273.564.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO J AEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ogontz, county of Montgomery, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Show or Display Cases, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in show or display cases, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective construction for holding the glass or other sides in position, the sides, and binding all of the parts together.
I/Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, its construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of two sides of a cas a, showing the clamping device for holding said sides in position; Fi 2, a similar view taken from the opposite direction, Fig. 3, a vertical section of a portion of a case, illustrating the manner in which all of the parts are held together and drawn tightly in place; Fig. 4, a plan of the fastener in blank before being bent up; Fig. 5, a per spective of the fastener as it is bent when holding the parts of the case together.
In these drawings, A. represents the fastener, which is preferably made of sheet metal stamped in the form shown in Fig. 4, consisting of two right-angle sections B and C, the former being provided with the tongu s D, E, F, and G and the latter with the tongues H I J K for the purpose hereinafter set forth. In utilizing this blank for securing the sides K and L of the case together the tongues E-F G of the section B are bent downward at right angles to the body of the section, so as to embrace the upper edge of the side K, the tongue E projecting into the notch N, formed in this side, while the tongues I, J, and K of the section C are likewise bent downward at right angles to the body of this last-named section, so as to embrace the upper edge of the side L, the tongue I projectsecuring the top upon ing into the notch M. It will be clearly seen that as the side L abuts against the side K the fastener will hold these gather, it being noted that the tongue K tends beyond the side L, and thus prevrnts any outward longitudinal movement of the side K. A tension-wire 0 pass s through the holes P, formed in the blank and downward between the abutting edges of the sides L and L and through the base Q of the case, where the ends thereof are secured to any suitable means, such as a screw R, by which the tension-wire may be drawn taut, thus securely holding the sides together and upon the base. It will of course be understood that one of these fasteners and tension-wire is to be used for each corner of the case where all the sides are of glass or for the abutting corners of the glass portion of the case where a wooden or other back is used.
After the sides and base have been secured. together, as above described, the top S is placed in position and the tongues D and H bent over the edges of the top, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thereby securing the top firmly upon the sides.
From this description it will be seen that an exceedingly rigid case will be constructed, requiring but a small amount of light metalwork to produce the desired results.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In combination with a display-case, a fastener having two sections at right angles to each other, a series of tongues formed upon each section and bent downward for engaging the upper edges of the sides of the case, a tongue upon each of the sections bent downward for engaging a notch in each side of the case, a tongue on each section bent upward and inward for s curing the top in place, a tension-wire for holding the fastener in position and drawing the sides of the case against the bottom thereof, as specified.
2. In combination with a display-case or the like, a fastener formed from sheet metal consisting of two sections at right angles to each other, a series of tongues on each section, bent downward for engaging the upper edges of the sides of the case and tongues E and I also formedon the section and bent downward, notches formed in the upper edges of the sides of the case with which said tongues E and I engage to prevent longitudinal movement of said sides, tongues D and K sides firmly to- I also formed with the sections and bent up- In testimony whereof I have hereunto ward and inward for engaging and holding affixed my signature in the presence of the the top of the case in place, a tension-wire two subscribing witnesses.
passing through the fastener downward and OTTO JAEGER. through the bottom of the case and means Witnesses: for tightening said tension-wire, as and for THOMAS LEPERD,
the purpose set forth S. S. WILLIAMSON.
