Description
.No.847,824. PATENTED MAR..19, 1901 G. W. ROBERTS.
APPLICATION PIBED 170V. 24,1906.
I 6' Witness I H UNITED STTES PATENT oFFroE.
GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 19, 1907.
Application filed November 24, 1906. Serial No. 344,933.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ravenna, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gages for masons and bricklayers use; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a device of simple construction for holding the opposite ends of the gage-line and in which the line may be quickly attached and detached from the gages.
Another object is to provide a gage for use by bricklayers, masons, and builders which shall be simple in construction, which can be quickly engaged with the sides of a wall, and in which the line or cord may be quickly adjusted at either end.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a partiallycon structed wall, showing my gage in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one of the gage members. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 4 is an end view.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of one of the gage members, provided with an extension 2, from which a spring-tongue 3 is out, said tongue 3 being then bent over upon the body portion 1 of the plate, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, said tongue being provided with corrugations 4 to firmly hold the end of the line 5. At the opposite end of the plate 1 two legs 6 are provided, said legs being spaced apart and provided with angular toes 7, designed for the purpose of engaging the sides of a wall or other structure, and intermediate the legs 6 is a finger-piece 8.
It will be understood that two of the gage members are used and that the toes 7 engage the sides of the wall, and the line 5 is attached to each of the tongues 3 at the opposite ends of said line, the finger-piece 8 being utilized for raising or lowering the gage members after each tier of brick or stone has been laid.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my gage or line holder is of simple construction, can be quickly cut from a single piece of sheet metal and bent into shape, is very convenient in use, for the reason that a man at either end of the line may adjust the same upon the wall and at the same time adjust the end of the cord to tighten the same, and that the device may be quickly manipulated and placed in position.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is The herein-described gage-line holder, consisting of two members of like construction, each comprising a flat sheet-metal body portion having an extended portion, a springtongue out from the extended ortion, said tongue being corrugated an bent over against the body portion for securing the end of a gage-line, legs formed on one edge of the body portion and bent at ri ht angles thereto, toes extending inward rom the s aced legs, and a finger-piece formed inte ra with the body and extending at right angles to the body of the member between the legs, and at opposite sides of the body from said legs, essentially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE W. ROBERTS.
