CLAPBOARD-GAGE AND SHINGLE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES INeLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ossining, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clapboard-Gages and Shingle-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a clapboard gage or shingle line holder, and has for its object the production of such a device that is at tached securely to the secured clapboard or shingle and holds the clapboard or shingle that is about to be secured to the house or roof in the desired position.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a clapboard or shingle line holder formed from a blank of sheet metal.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of my device in operation. Fig. 3 is a Section taken on line 8-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my device formed from blank sheets of metal. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blanks from which the device is formed.
Referring to the parts by reference numerals, denotes a primary section which is provided with a body portion 11 and a base 12 at its lower end. This base 12 is provided with spurs 13 which extend at right-angles to the base and in a parallel plane to that of the body portion 11. Formed on the longitudinal edges of the body portion 11 and extending at rightangles thereto, are flanges 1 1 that form guiding means for the auxiliary section 15. This auxiliary section 15 is provided with an angularly extending foot 16 at its upper end, which is provided with an upwardly extending flange member 17 that has a tapering end 18. The securing spike 19 is also carried by the auxiliary member 15.
Passing through the vertically extending slot 20 in the primary member 11, is a bolt 21 which is permanently attached to the auxiliary member 15 and has threaded on its outer end the nut 22. By tightening the nut 22 on the bolt 21, the sections are clamped Specification of Letters Eatent.

together and are held in the desired position. A scale 27 is provided for in this device, as shown, so as to secure the preferred adjustment. The upwardly extending flange 17 is also provided with means through which a nail or screw can be passed to secure the device to the loose clapboard or shingle.
As shown in Figs. 4: and 5 a form of this invention can be made from single sheets of material forming a primary and auxiliary section. Said primary section comprising a body 23 having a base 24 bent at rightangles to the body at its lower end, said base having spurs 25 bent at right-angles to the base. Along the longitudinal edges of the body 23 are flange members 26 that are used as guides for the auxiliary section which comprises a blank sheet of material, as shown in Fig. 5, and has at its upper end an angularly extending foot- 27 and an upwardly extending flange :28. These members 27 and 28 are of greater width than the body portion of the auxiliary member so as to provide a wide support for the shingle about to be secured. This form of the device isalso provided with a longitudinally extending slot formed in the primary section and also a clamping and securing means, as is shown and described, for the other form.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof. It is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to in clude all such as properly come Within the scope claimed.
What is claimed, is:
A clapboard or shingle gage comprising a primary and an auxiliary section, each formedfrom a single sheet of material, said primary section comprising a body having a base bent at right angles thereto, said base having spurs bent at its outer edge, said body having flanges bent on its longitudinal edges, said flanges extending at right-angles to said body, the auxiliary section slidably mounted on said primary section, an en larged foot formed upon the upper end of said auxiliary section so as to extend at approximately right angles thereto to form an abutting portion, said auxiliary section carrying a bolt, said primary section provided with a longitudinally extending slot, said bolt passing through said slot and a nut threaded upon said bolt for holding said signature in presence of two Witnesses. prlmary and sald auxlllary seotlons together,
