Description
N0. 863,786. PATENTED AUG. 20, 1907.
W. GURLETT.
BUILDING WALL.
| I I k PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM OURLETT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BUILDING-WALL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed May .6, 1907. Serial No. 372,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GURLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Building- Walls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to walls of hollow building blocks, and consists in the provision in such a wall of an inexpensive, easily applied and efficient device for connecting the meeting ends of two blocks together and holding a superposed block against lateral movement out of alinement with the lower blocks.
The present invention is designed as a specific improvement upon the device constituting the subject matter of my contemporary application, filed September 26, 1906, Serial Number 336,361; and its novelty, utility and practical advantages will be fully under stood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a broken perspective view showing the clip or connecting device comprised in my improvements as properly arranged relative to hollow building blocks in wall. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same. Fig, 3 is a perspective view of the clip, removed. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken at a right angle to Fig. 2.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:
A A are hollow building blocks or tiles arranged end to end. B is a simlar hollow block or tile arranged with its intermediate portion above the joint between the lower blocks or tiles, as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 1, and G is my improved clip. The said clip is preferably, though not necessarily made of sheetmetal, and it comprises a flat body (1, end flanges b reaching upward at right angles from the body, and flanges c struck from the body a and reaching downward at right angles therefrom. I prefer to have the flanges c depend from the outer walls of the openings d, formed by the displacement of the flanges from the body, and I also prefer to arrange two of the flanges adjacent to one edge of the body, and two adjacent to the opposite edge thereof. The pairs of flanges care arranged a distance apart slightly greater than the combined thicknesses of the meeting end walls of the lower blocks, and hence it follows that the clip may be readily made to straddle said blocks with a view of strongly holding the lower blocks together.
In the practice of my invention, the blocks A are arranged end to end as illustrated, and the clip 0 is arranged so that it straddles the meeting end walls of said blocks and is enabled to strongly hold the same together and against endwise movement with respect to each other. The upper block B is then arranged so that its intermediate portion rests over the flat body a of the clip, and above the joint between the blocks A, and with. its side walls, preferably the outer sides of said side walls, in snug engagement with the flanges b of the clip, when, as will be readily understood, the block B will be securely held in alinement with the lower block and against lateral displacement in either direction.
The operation described in the foregoing is continued throughout the building of the wall; and it will be observed that the clips C are adapted to be quickly and easily placed in position and are calculated to facilitate the placing of the intermediate portions of upper blocks over the joints between the blocks on which the upper blocks are superposed. It will also be noted that by connecting the meeting end walls of the lower blocks together and holding the intermediate portions of upper blocks, the clips 0 contribute materially to the strength and durability of the wall.
By virtue of the flanges 0 being struck from the body a, it will be observed that my novel clip may be economically formed of a comparatively small piece of sheet-metal, and it will also be observed that the body a is enabled to lend stiffness and strength to the said flanges c.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A wall comprising lower, hollow bloclis arranged end to end, an upper block superposed on the lower blocks, and a clip having a flat body resting on the meeting end walls of the lower blocks and between the upper edges of said end walls, and the upper block, flanges or arms struck from the body at points intermediate opposite edges thereof and reaching downward at right angles to the body and a"-ranged at the inner sides of the meeting end walls of the lower blocks to hold said blocks together, a flange or arm reaching upward at a right angle from one end of the fiat body and opposed to one side of the upper block, and a flange or arm reaching upward at a right angle from the opposite end of the flat body and opposed to the opposite side of the upper block; said upwardly reaching flanges or arms being adapted to hold the upper block against lateral displacement.
2. A wall cpmprising lowe1','h0llow blocks arranged end to end, an upper block superposed on the lower blocks, and a clip having a flat body resting on the meeting end walls of the lower blocks and between the upper edges of said end walls and the upper block, flanges or arms struck from the body at points intermediate opposite edges thereof and reaching downward at right angles to the body and arranged at the inner sides of the meeting end walls of the lower blocks to hold said blocks together, and
'fianges or arms reaching upward at right angles from the flat body and snugly receiving the upper block between them.
3. As an article of manufacture, a metallic clip for the purpose described comprising a flat body, flanges or arms struck from the flat body at points intermediate opposite edges thereof and extending downward therefrom, and flanges or arms extending upward from the opposite ends
