Be it known that I, HENRY C. SEIPP, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Ties or Hangers for Buildings, 850. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a tie or hanger, and has special reference to such a tie or hanger which isadapted for use either in tying walls to ether or for hanging joists.
he object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient tie or hanger which will not only do away with the forming of large t ing walls in building stone for the end of t e tie, but one which can be used in a single small circular hole and will form a stronger and cheaper form of tie than the ones most generall used.
A still further object of the invention is to provide such a hanger which will not only do away with the tedious, laborious, and expen sive forming of the recesses in the beams of a building for the ends of the hanger, but will enable the same to be held within small bored holes in the beams for supporting the joists and will be cheaper and stronger than the ordinary hanger now in use.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of arts, as hereinafter more specifically set orth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention aplpertains to construct and use my improve tie or hanger, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a vertical section of a build ing-wall with my improved tie or hanger applied thereto as a wall-tie. Fig. 2 is a plan View of a portion of a stone block, showing the end of the tie in position. Fig. 3 is a peripective view of the tie or hanger in this form.

and when being congranite or stone buildof the granite or stone front 2, formed of the blocks 3, and the rear brickwork 4 against the same. The front 2 and brickwork 4 are required to be tied together by the tie or hanger 5, and such tie consists of a flat piece of metal which is formed or bent to she )e to provide the flat body portion 5, the right-angle flat portion 6 at one end of said body portion, and the semicircular or U-shaped gutter-supporting portion 7 at the opposite end of said body portion. This portion 7 is bent or formed at right angles to the flat portion 5 and has the 0 en outer side 7 and open ends 7. In each o the blocks 3 of the outer or front walls 2 is a small circular hole 3, which is bored, drilled, or formed therein in any suitable a wall of a building, structed for the usual ing is generally made manner, and as these blocks and rear brickwork 4 are built u in forming the wall 1, as shown in Fig. 1, the tie 5 connects each one of said blocks with said brickwork by iittin between each of said blocks and within said brickwork. This is accomplished by placing the grooved end portion 7 of the tie 5 within the hole 3 in each block 3 as it is placed in position on the wall 1 and allowing part of the flat body portion 5 of the tie to rest upon the block containing such hole and generally upon the mortar 2 placed thereon, while the other parts of said body portion and the an gular portion 6 can rest upon the brickwork 4, which is built up to this point. The mortar 2 is then placed over such block 3 and body 5 of the tie 5 on said block, which will also fill up the hole 3 in said block and grooved seat 7 in the U-sha )ed anchoring end 7, and then another block is placed on said block and on said mortar, so that the tie is secured in the space 2 between these blocks and after which the brickwork 4 is built up around the body of said tie and angle portion 6 thereon and against the newlylaced block 3, which operation or process of orming the wall 1 is continued until said wall is completed.

It will be obvious that my improved tie or hanger may be used for a variety of purposes other than those descnibed and that various L is open at its side or modifications and changes in the design and k shape of the same may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing an Y of its advantages. It will thus be seen that my improved tie or hanger can be made by hand or machine and when in use will form a firm and substantial suppoint for the Wall or joist. It an be applied to its uses readily and easily and when used as a Wall-tie will allow the mortar to get into the end and around the same in its anchoring-hole so as to have a greater tying and binding action than in the ordinary devices of this character, while it will also be seen that when it is used as a joist-ban. er it will not be liable to slip from or out of t 1e joist or beam holding the same by reason of its an- .ehoring ends fitting Within and conforming to the su porting-holes for the same.
What claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
i. As a new article of manufacture, a tie or hanger having a body portion, and an anchorihg portion bent out at right angles from said body portion at one or both ends to form a U-sbaped gutter-supporting portion which top and ends.
'2. A supporting device for walls, joists, 800..., termed of a bent U-shaped body portion, and an anchoring portion bent out at right an les from each end of said body portion to rerun a U-shaped guttersupporting portion which is open at its side or top and ends.
