Fig. 8 1s a side elevational view of the form of support and tie seen in Fig. 8. Fig. 9l is a side elevational view of the form of combined support and tie seen in Fig.b 9. Fig. 12 1s a side elevational view of a combined support and tie of my improved construction used in connection with reinforcing bars occupying a vertical plane, as is the case in the reinforcement of concrete walls.
My invention relates generally to rein- Eorced concrete construction and more particularly to a support and tie for the metal rods used in reinforcing concrete floors,
and like structures.
My present invention is an improvement upon the combined support and tie disclosed in my cowpendinlg a plication filed April 4, 1913, serial o. 58,837.
In reinforcing concrete l'loors, ceilings, and walls, it is desirable and '1n nearly all instances, essential, that the reinforcing rods be supported in a plane, above or away from the temporary flooring or form upon which the concrete islaid and lto this end I have devised 'a comparatively simple, strong and ine ensive one piece support and tie, which can. readily combined?? with reinforcing rodsand which `will maintain the same a ilbsmntial distance above the floor or form,
while the concrete iniplastic condition is i being poured or distributed thereupon.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a combined support and tie which will automatically grip and engage the supported rod or rods to eliectively hold the same in proper position, which gripping effect is obtained by reason of the Weight of the supported rods,4 which weight aeting upon the support and tie causes the same to perform the functions of a lever with one end resting upon the surface'of the false Work or form and with the other end gripping the sup orted rod.
Where the kcombine support and tie is utilized in connection with a pair of crossed rods, the upper portion of the device grips the upper one of the rods and the lower rod forms a fulcrum for said device.
Other objects of my invention are, to form a combined support or chair from wire or sheet metal, which can be readily `cut and bent to proper shape; to provide a device which can be readily combined with the reinforcing rods, and which will effectively hold said rods against lengthwise movement; and, to provide a device which isl practically skeleton in form and around which the lastic concrete `will readily flow so that sai device will be wholly embedded -in the concrete when the same has become hardened. W'ith the above and other objects in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed. i
In the form of the device shown in Fig. 1 the combined support and tie is 'formed from a single length of wire. shaped so as to support and tie togethertwo reinforcing rods which are arranged substantially at right angles to each other. In this form of the device a section of Wire of suitable size and length is bent at its center to form a semicircular part 1, which is adapted to engaeover and grip the upper reinforcing ro A. From this bent central part 1, a section of Wire extends downward to form theparallel legs 2 which occupy an angle of approximately 45 relative to a vertical plane and the lower portions of these legs are bent into semicircular form to provide curved seats 3 for the lower reinforcing rod B. From these curved seats the wire of "ight angles to the planes occupied by the "rtical legs of the device.
In Fig. ll I have illustrated a combined .support and'tie of the form seen in Fig. 1 and which support and tie is applied to a pair of reinforcing lrods which occupy a vertical plane as is the case in the reinfrcenient of walls and the like. Where such construction is carried out the 'ends of the longer legs 15 of the device bear against the face of the false wall or form and the verticallx1 disposed rod C is forced against the lzorizontally disposed rod D by a wedge or key 1G inserted lbetween the outer portions of the pairs of legs of the device. This arA range-ment effectually tics the two rods together and holds the same a proper distance away from the surface of lthe false wall or form so that said rods vare embedded in the concrete in the desired planes. In this form of the device the tying together of the rods is eiectcd by means ot' the. wedge or key instead of by the weight of the rods as is the case where the rods are horizontally disposed.
)L device of my improved construction is comparatively simple, can be cheaply' manufactured, is readily applied to reinforcing rods and automatically grips and ties the same 'together by reason of the weight of said rods.
The ,device when properly applied performs the functions of a lever, and the gripping action on the rods obtained by the weight ot said rods react-ing through the support, which latter fulcrums 'upon the lower one of the supported'rods, thus transmitting the resulting reaction through leverage to toe upper rod, consequently tying the two rods together and supporting the same the desired distance abpve the surface of the false work or form.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size7 forni and construction of my improved support and tie can bo made and substituted igor those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my in'v'entii'in7 the scope of which is Set forth in the appended claims.
claim: v
l. in a. device. of the class described, a pair of vertically disposed parallel legs provided with seats adapted to receive a reinforcing rod, a second a-ir oi' parallel legs projecting upwardly and outwardly from thiA iii-st n'ientioned legs, the upper en'ds of which upifarill-v and outwardly projecting legs are united to form aseat for a second forcing rod which is positioned on top Vl-at right angles to the first mentioned reinforcing rod, and which seat adapted to engage the second mentioned reinforcing rod at a point a substantialA distance to one side of the vertical plane occupied by thev first mentioned reinforcing rod, whereby the Weight of' both rods reacting through the pairs of legs causes the device to grip both reinforcing rods.
9.. A device of prising a pair of vertically disposed parallel legs, a second pair of parallel legs formed integral with and projecting upwardly and outwardly from the -irst mentioned legs, the
the class I described com prising a pair of parallel inclined legs, the
upper ends of which are united to` orm a seat for a reinforcing rod, the lower portions of said legs being curved-upward to form a pair of horizontally alined seats.
adapted to receive' a fulcrum member, and .y
a pair of vertically disposed parallel legs .integral with and extending downwardly from the lower portions of said inclined legs, the seat at the upper ends 'of the inlclincd being located a substantial distance to one side of'the ulcrur'n, whereby the weight of the supported rodA reacts through the device and causes the'sa-me-to grip said rod.'
4. In a device ofthe class described a continuous strip of metal bent at its central portion to form a Seat and two parallel members extending downwardly at au angle therefrom, said parallel membersA `being ex-l tended upwardlyat their lower portions to form a pair of horizontally alined seats, and thence downwardly to form a pair 'of rertical legs, the `first mentioned scat being. located at a substantial distance to one side of the second mentioned seat whereby tho weight of reinforcing rods located in said seats will effect a tilting action and cause the said seats to hold the rods in position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX rny signature in the presence of two witnesses,
this 27th day of Mayi 1913.
