WILLIAM F. LA MORTE, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE FIREPROOF CONTRACTORS CORPORATION, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
HANGER OR CLIP FOR STEEL FRAMEWORK CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMar. 6, 1917.
Application filed December 4, 1915. Serial No. 65,153.
- used for supporting and connecting angle, a channel or other such bars or rods, for the attachment of metal lathing or the like, as employed in the building of steel and .concrete structures. An object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which may be constructed from a single piece of strap iron or the like, will be inexpensive and simple in manufacture, and will prove highly desirable and effectual in use.
, With this and other objects in view, my
- Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring tothe drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, my improved device is formed from a single piece of mate.
rial such as strap iron or the like, and comprisesa main or body portion 10, which in the manufacture is split vertically, as at 11, and the arm 12 is bent forwardly thereof, the outer end of the same being curved upwardly, as at 13, to form a retaining portion for the-angle bar, hereinafter more.
fully described.
The upper end of theportion 10 is provided with a hooked portion 14- formed by bending the upper portion thereof downwardly upon itself. A recessed or cut-out portion 15 is provided in the lower half of the body portion 10 at the opposite side from the arm 12, and having a restricted-entrance 16, which permits insertion of the channel bar to be supported. The upper edge of the recessed portion 15 is in the same plane with the upper surface of the arm 12, so that the channel bar supported therein snugly --en-.
gages the under surface of the angle bar to which the clip is secured, and thereby forms a solid and secure connection therehetween. The cliphanger is secured tothe angle bar 17 byengaging the hooked portion 14 over the upper edge thereof and-snapping the arm beneath the' under side, so that the curved end 13 engages the front edge of the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. For this purpose, the arm 12 is made slightly resilient.
The channel bar 18 is then placed in position in the recessed portion 15, so that its upper side snugly engages the under surface of the angle bar 17.
In Fig. 4, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of construction, in which two channel bars are supported, the hooked portion 19- at the top corresponding to x the hooked portion 14 of the first'construction,
and the arm 20, corresponding to the arm' 12, being of an equal size to accommodate the upper and lower flanges ofthe channel bar.
It will he understood that by changing the proportions oi these members, various shapes and sizes of bars may be supported in a. similar manner.
My improved device, it will be noted, will prove very advantageous, and will lend itself readily to the uses intended, and be-. cause of the simple and secure manner in which the same may be applied, .w i ll greatly fadilitate the work of erection. The shape shown in the figures is the shape in which the clip is manufactured, and this is in no Way changed when the clip is applied to the.
supporting beams or bars from its pre a tachment shape or shape as manufactured,
hence it is entirelyiunnecessary to employ any tools whatsoever in applying my improved hanger or clip, resulting in a great saving of labor and time, and in the production of uniform andreliabi'e connections be tween the beams and bars; From the-drawings it willbe seen that the metal is of such thickness as to produce a natural springiness therein, hencethe same will not become permanentiy bent out shape when forced into engagement Wiiil' the beams or bars, but will assume its pare-aiudmaent shape.
The arm 12 it will be noted from. thehooi portion i iand ii e downwardiy puiiing'forco were exerfied upon the ciip, there would be a tendency for the clip to assume on inclined position. The recess for supporting thejsuppornid beam or bar is at the other side of the clip than the sfle upon which the arm 19) is loomed, and is arranged in avertioai line directly below the hook portion l i 'so that the supported beam has a tendency to draw riownwardiy upon the clip. This dowmvard action at one side acts against and compensates the actionoi the weight; upon the arm. 12, and in this Way the supporting of the bar and, the connection be tween the beam zinri bar is properly beiaimed.
l have illustrated and (ieecribegi' preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention bin, it is obvious flint changes may be made therein, "Within the spirit and scope thereofl as i'fineri in L t-he appended claim.
I oie imr The eombinifb'iciin Si A framework COB- struetioii wi i superimposed contacting beams or bers, of metal hanger, comprising a perpendicular body portion having a re cessed; portion at one side thereof and in the lower part thereof adapted i0 receive 1i beam or bar ior ard]. exi'endlno' arm on on:
boo" )OHIIOH at Hie other side than that having the recess, and having its upper me in line with the upper edge oi the recess oi the body porrion, and adapted to reroivo a cross beam or bar contacting); with the first beam or bar in the recess, and having an upturned portion at the forward and of said arm adapted to non-embreoingiy engage the forward edge oniy of the received cross beam or bar, and a downwardly extending hooked portion at the upper porn, of the body pm'tion, in a vertical line with said recessed portion, and substantially spaced therefrom, adapteoi to engage the upper edge and a portion of the front surface. of the cross beam or bar recoived on the forwarciiy extending; arm, (and adapted to prevent outward movementthereof at right angles to said body portion.
In testimony that i oiann the ioregoing;
my invention, I have signeoi my name n presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
