Description

July 18, 1961 Filed Sept. 29, 1958 J, A. DORAN RECEPTACLE HOLDER 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR. JAMES A. DORAN y 4 QEYW ATTORNEY July 18, 1961 .1. A. DORAN 2,992,804 RECEPTACLE HOLDER Filed Sept. 29, 1958 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. JAMES A. DORANi W QIFM.
ATTORNEY United States Patent Drainage Co Providence, R.I., a corporation of Rhode Island Filed Sept. 29, 1958, Ser. No. 764,049 1 Claim. (Cl. 248311) This invention provides important improvements in the apparatus used by hospitals, institutions, convalescent homes, and the like, for conducting body drainage from bed-patients into. storage containers.
One of the most common types of drainage is pursuant to kidney and bladder operations, the patient being catheterized with a plastic tubing which extends into a bottle or other receptacle usually located on the floor under the bed. These bottles are always very conspicuous and hence prove to be a source of embarrassment to patients and visitors alike. Furthermore, such bottles are troublesome for nurses and attendants; and when the floor is being cleaned, the bottles are often upset and the contents spilled, thus necessitating a distressing cleaning-up task.
By using my improved apparatus, however, the drainage bottles are protected from accidents and are entirely concealed from view so that there is no more embarrassment for visitors and bed-patients.
Now that such drainage bottles are no longer troublesome they can be utilized for any kind of drainage that doctors may suggest or deem desirable. Also, bed-urinals would make self-service practicable and save a great amount of time for nurses and attendants; also, such urinal service would take care of prostate and incontinent patients so that accidental wetting of beds by male patients would be eliminated, thus greatly reducing hospital operating expenses.
A primary object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a specially designed holder for drainage bottles which maybe permanently mounted to a hospital bed under the bed-side for supporting the drainage bottle a distance from the floor.
Another object i ID PIQYide a holding device which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured so as to m k i f i le f r ll the beds in a given hospital to be q pp w h y older so that every bed would always be. in readiness to furnish drainage service to any patient that may require same.
Another object is to provide an apparatus that can receive. ny nd Qfi drainage. from bed-patients, through a connecting tubing to the. drainage receptacle.
Another object is. to provide a holder for drainage bottles so arranged as to permit easy and quick removal of full bottles therefrom and replacement with empties.
Another object is to provide a holder for drainage containers to be suspended from a bracket support that is mounted on a bed rail manually, and is secured permanently by bending over two lugs on top of the rail.
Another object is to provide a holder for a drainage bottle that has a semi-circular wall which conceals the drainage bottle.
Another object is to provide a holder device adapted to be mounted on a bed, said holder receiving and housing a drainage bottle and having means for connecting drainage tubing to the bottle.
Another object is to provide a holding device that will house the drainage container at a maximum elevation, so that it can be used on the high-low types of hospital beds and be a safe distance from the fioir when such a bed is adjusted to its lowest position.
These and other objects and advantages will be ap- 2,992,804 Patented July 18, 1961 parent from the following specification and the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus mounted on the side rail of a hospital bed;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation in section of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a top view thereof;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the bracket and holder per se which form a part of my invention; and
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a slightly modified form of my invention.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, it will be seen that the holder 20 has a circular base 21, a semi-cylindrical wall 22, a top wall 23, and a neck-like extension 24 having a bearing groove 25 therein. The drain bottle 30 rests freely in the holder 20 on base 21. An opening 26 in the holder 20 exhibits the level of bottle contents to nurses and attendants. The extension 24 has ample space for receivingtherein the neck 31 of the bottle. The extension also has an external bearing groove 25 which is interengaged with the elevated platform 17 of the bracket 10, from which the holder 20 is suspended. The base 21 of the holder has a lip 29 to prevent any undue vibration from upsetting the drain bottle 30 off said base.
The bracket 10 is of very novel construction. Ordinarily such a bracket would be mounted with screws or bolts, necessitating drilling and tapping screw-thread holes on top of the bed rail. But hospital managers protest against such machine work because of the high cost, and because they resent mutilating their beds. Therefore, it is compulsory to use this novel bracket, as it is mountable in a few seconds by hand, and by any employee unskilled in such matters. This bracket is easily manufac-. tured by stamping a sheet steel blank of the required shape and then forming it into the. finished article by suitable dies.
As shown in FIG. 4, the lower edge is formed upwardly as at 12 to fit on the lower edge of the bed rail 11, which bed rail is usually an angle iron. The surface 18 is made to fit snugly on the top of the bed rail. The elevated shelf 16 extends to hook-like portion 17, the inner edge 14, 15 of which defines an opening for receiving the groove 25 in neck-like extension 24. The lugs 13 and 13 are partially bent downwardly. T0 mount the bracket as in FIGS. 1 and 2, the edge is held against the lower edge of the bed rail and then pushed over on top of the rail. The next step is to bend over the lugs 13 and 13' as shown in FIG. 2 to secure the bracket permanently. It will be understood, however, that although I prefer to mount the bracket on the bed rail as described, it would be possible to mount said bracket to some other supporting frame or the like which forms a permanent part of the bed without departing from the scope of my invention.
The holder 20 is mounted in the the open slot BB at the slot AA and rotating the holder slightly, thus interengaging the groove 25 with the platform 17. More specifically, by maneuvering the holder 20 so that hook end A of platform 17 (note FIG. 4) extends into the space BB, the aforementioned interengage ment may be easily elfected by rotating the said holder. As shown in FIG. 3, when the holder is in its normal posi tion in the bracket 10, the concealing wall 22, 22 is in line with the bed rail 11 and thus hides the drain bottle 30. In such position, the slots AA and BB are out of register and thus form a closed tubular space 27. The fact that the drainage tubing 40 is located in the space 27 functions to prevent any accidental dislodging of the drainage bottle 30 from the holder 20. As will be seen most clearly in FIG. 4, the edge B of neck 24 is cut back bracket 10 by placing at its lower portion, thereby providing clearance so that the bottle 30 may be easily placed in position on the holder.
When a :full bottle must be removed, the attendant or nurse turns the'holder 20 a quarter turn, placing B on A, and B on A, registering the slots BB on AA, and forming an opening in the space 27 through which the tubing 40 will pass and permit removal of the drainage bottle. The attendant then removes the tubing 40 from the full bottle and places it on an empty bottle, and then installs the bottle with tubing in the holder 20, and reverses the quarter turn to put the holder 20 into its normal, operative position.
. The weight of the holder 20 and the bottle 30 with its contents is carried by the bracket table 14 in the groove 25. This large bearing surface permits the easy turning of the holder 20 for the opening quarter turn, and also for the reverse closing quarter turn.
For the successful operation of this apparatus, it is important that the drainage tubing be held firmly in the bottle neck to avoid the risk of accidental pulling out of the tubing from the bottle while in use. For this purpose, this'invention includes the novel compressible stopper 41, shown in FIG. 2. The cor-k 41 has a central bore in which the tubing fits snugly, and in this bore is molded an inwardly extending circular rib 46. The outer diameter is tapering, so that when it is forced into the bottle, the rib '46 is forced inwardly to pinch the tubing, hence preventing accidental displacement of the latter. To remove the stopper and tubing, it is necessary to grasp the flange at the top of the stopper and pull out both stopper and tubing' These stoppers are preferably made of molded rubber or molded resilient plastic.
The above described form. of my invention, revolvable within an elevated bracket support, is especially suitable or adaptable for so-called high-low bends that may be adjusted down to a position about ten inches from the floor. But my modified embodiment, as shown in FIG. 5, is usable on all beds other than the high-low type, or in other'words, on beds the side rail of which is spaced relatively high above the fioor at all times. In this modified form, the holder 20' does not revolve; therefore, the extension 24'a'nd the elevated platform are omitted. Instead of being elevated, the bracket platform 44 is lower than the portion 18' resting on the bed rail 11. The bracket is installed like bracket 10, by first hooking upturned edge 12 under the side rail and then turning the bracket over so that the portion 18 rests firmly on the top of the rail 11, and finally clinching over the lugs 13" and 13, to complete permanent mounting of the bracket 10 on the rail 11. The holder 20 is then mounted on the under side of the platform 44 with screws or bolts 42, or by any other method, such as welding. In this modified form, the concealing wall of the holder 20 is always in the correct position so that the removal and replacement 4 of drainage bottles is done at the rear of the holder. But due to the large areas of open space under these high beds, the changing of the drainage bottles is easy for the attendants or nurses.
In the manufacturing of these holders, they may be cast from any metal, such as aluminum, zinc, etc., or they may be built by assembling and welding together a base, a semi-circular wall, and a top part. If preferred, they may be made as plastic moldings.
The drainage containers may be glass bottles or metal cans with suitable filling nozzles. Or they may be made of paper or cardboard, with a filling nozzle of molded papier-mache or other material, and be of such low cost as to be disposable and thus save the cost of washing or sterilizing glass containers.
As this invention may be embodied in several forms without departing from the spirit thereof, these embodiments are illustrative and are not restrictive, and the extent of this invention is defined by the scope of the append claim.
I claim:
