BOTTLE SUPPORT I Filed Nov. 25, 1947 INVENTOR. ORIE J/NCLA/R 71mm ym A ti'orn e ys Patented Jan. 18, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BOTTLE SUPPORT Orie I. Sinclair, Wilmington, Calif.
Application November 25, 1947, Serial No. 788,030
3 Claims. 1 This invention relates to improvements in bottle hangers or supports and more particularly to an improved device for supporting a bottle,
such as a drainage bottle, on a bed or bed-side stand.
Various medical treatments require drainage facilities and some require the use of such facilities over extend-ed periods of time. In the treatment of bladder ailments, for example, it is customary to irrigate and drain the bladder, using a flexible tube and a standard 1000 cc. drainage bottle. At the present time the drainage bottle is secured to the bed, or to a stand adjacent the bed, by a strip of bandage material, adhesive tape or similar material, and the end of the tube at the bottle is similarly tied in place. Under such conditions the removal of the bottle for emptying or cleaning and replacement of the bottle is a difficult and time-consuming operation that frequently involves accidental spilling of the contents of the bottle.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide an improved bottle-supporting device that is small in size and of light weight, and may be quickly and easily secured to a bottle for ready removal therefrom when desired, which may be hung from the structure of the bed or stand and quickly attached and removed without any danger of accidentally spilling the contents of the bottle, which provides a suitable clip for securing the drainage tube in proper position relative to the bottle, and which can be economically manufactured of inexpensive material.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a cross-sectional view of a fragmentary portion of a bed showing in side elevation a bottle support illustrative thereto;
Figure 2 is a plan view of a strip of material which provides the band surrounding the bottle neck, as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-section of the improved bottle support on a somewhat enlarged scale; and,
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the bottle support illustrated in Figures 1 and 3.
of the invention applied With continued reference to the drawing, the
rubber drainage tube which leads from the F a: an upper tubular bar l6 and a lower tubular bar iii H. The bed is illustrated principally to indicate the manner of supporting the bottle hanger from a side bar of the bed, but it is to be understood that the hanger may be operatively attached to a bedside stand or other convenient article of furniture as well as to the bed.
The hanger itself comprises, in general, a bottle neck-encircling band l8, a wire bracket IS, a screw 20, and a wing nut 2| for the screw.
The band I8 may be conveniently formed from an elongated strip of thin flexible material, such as thin sheet metal, having parallel-arcuate longitudinal edges and substantially semi-circular ends and apertures 22 disposed one adjacent each end of the strip medially of the width thereof. While the strip constituting the band l8 may be formed of any suitable material, a material such as stainless steel is preferred because of its non-corrosive properties.
When the strip illustrated in Figure 2 is bent to annular form about the neck of a bottle it has a frustro-conical shape, as illustrated in Figure 1, and the smaller end engages the bead l2 at the outer end of the bottle neck to firmly secure the bottle in the band. The rounded end portions are bent outwardly, substantially at right angles to the remainder of the strip to provide a pair of apertured ears 23 to which the bracket I9 is attached by the screw '20,
Bracket I9 is preferably formed of a length of wire of suitable stiffness and preferably of a noncorrosive material, such as stainless steel. This bracket has a substantially straight shank portion 24 at one end of which is provided an integral curved hook 25 having a rounded loop 26 at the outer end thereof and at the opposite end of the shank is provided a substantially circular-apertured lug 21 which is insertible between the apertured ears 23 of band l8 and receives the screw 20, as is clearly illustrated in Figure 3.
A substantially straight stem 28 extends from lug 21 along the shank 24 part way of the length of the shank and has its outer ends turned outwardly substantially at right angles thereto and provided with a curved hook 29 smaller than hook 25 which provides a clip for securing tube II in operative position relative to bottle H], as is clearly illustrated in Figure l. The outer endlof clip 29 is also preferably provided with a substantially circular loop 30 of small diameter to eliminate any sharp points or edges at the ends of the clip.
In the arrangement illustrated, shank 24 and stem 28 diverge away from lug 29 at a small angle relative to eachother but this angle maybe varied-- m as desired to bring the tube clip 29 in proper operative position above the small open end of"v band l8.
Screw 2D is inserted through the apertures-Lina ears 23 and through the apertures in lug 21 which V between the apertured end portions of said band,
lug is disposed between the ears, andwing nufl'zl is threaded down on the screw-etcclampthez'lug p between the ears and simultaneously clamp the band IB about the neck of the bottle to'fir'mly secure the bottle neck in the band. The entire device is simple inconstructiom re quiri'ng onlyfour. different parts; is highly eife'ce tivei andxeflicientr in use,. as is clearly'apparenti from an inspectionnof 'Figure l, is 'convenientrto usean'd supports the bottleifrom the'bedror. stand r structure: insa manner such that thebo'ttle can-1 besqui-cklyland: easily emptied without danger-soft spilling the contents thereof andmayb'e replacede; whentne'cessary-or desirable.
