REFRESl-MENT HOLDER FOR TUBULAR FURNITURE Filed Aug. 27, 1962 /3 lNViINTOR.
zed]; Roi J. 31512011 United States Patent Ofilice 3,1llifiiti Patented Dec. 31, 1963 3,116,046 REFRESHMENT HQLDER FUR TUBULAR FURNITURE Roy S. Risdon, 751 Dogwood Road, West Palm Beach, Fla.
Filed Aug. 27, 1962, Ser. No. 219,489 3 Claims. (ill. Mid-231) My present invention relates to supports and more particularly to a holder for use in connection with garden furniture of tubular construction when serving liquid refreshments.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical support for holding a glass or the like, which is constructed of a single unitary sheet of metal that may be conveniently attached to an upright portion of a table, chair or chaise lounge constructed of aluminum tubing without any additional securing means.
Another object of my invention is to provide a practical article supporting means of novel, simple and inexpensive construction which can be easily clamped as a unit to an upright portion of tubular type furniture such as is commonly employed in outdoor living areas.
Other objects and advantages will be in part evident to those skilled in the art and in part pointed out hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein there is shown by way of illustration and not of limitation a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of the support,
FIGURE 2 is a back view of the support as shown in FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of the support as shown in FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 4 shows my invention as applied to the arm supporting portion of a chair constructed of tubular members,
FIGURE 5 is a developed view showing the shape of the blank from which the device as shown in FIGURE 1 of the drawing is formed, and
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary view showing my invention in more detail as applied to a vertical tube.
A novel and outstanding aspect of the present invention is considered to reside in the fact that my holder or refreshment supporting device is constructed from a single sheet or strip of material and preferably a sheet of aluminum or stainless steel having a stillness which when formed as described will provide a clamping grip upon a member of the furniture with which it is to the used.
As illustrated in FIGURES l, 2 and 3 of the drawings the device is formed from the single sheet of material, designated generally by the numeral It by rolling and/ or otherwise shaping portions thereof to provide a relatively large open-ended cylinder 11 from one side of which there extends a pair of spaced clips 12. and between which there is a cooperating wider clip 13. Adjacent the clip 13 there is an additional tongue-like extension 14 that is bent inwardly in a reversely curved manner that is located within the cylindrical portion 11 of the device.
As illustrated in FIGURE 4, the intermediate or main portion of the sheet of material It forms the cylinder 11, from which tongues 15 when rolled in a reversed direction from the main body portion 11 of the sheet material will form the clamping clips 12. At the other end of the blank l0 and extending from the cylinder portion 11 there is a central tongue 16 which when rolled likewise in a reverse manner from the cylindrical portion 11 will form the intermediate clip 13' and immediately below the extending tongue portion 16 the blank It as here shown, has an extending tongue 17 which when rolled as above described will form the bracket 14 within the lower end of the cylindrical portion 11 of the device. When the sheet of material It) is rolled up in the manner described the spaced clips 12 and the intermediate clip 13 Will be normally positioned slightly out of circular alignment so that when these clip-forming members are placed around a tubular support by compressing the cylindrical portion 11 a clamping action will be provided thereby when the cylindrical portion 11 is allowed to expand by removal of the compressive force therefrom. In other words, when being applied to a piece of furniture the operator will grasp the cylindrical portion 11 and by applying a compressive force the spaced clips 12 and the intermediate clip 13 will be displaced in such a manner that the member to which the device is to be attached, may be positioned therebetween and following this when released the spring-like effect of the cylindrical portion 11 will tend to return to its truly cylindrical form and thus cause the space clips 12. and intermediate clip 13 to engage the tubular supporting member with a clamping action.
As shown in FIGURE 5 it is contemplated that my device will find its greatest use in connection with outdoor furniture such as is now commonly constructed of aluminum tubing and for appearance it is preferred that a stiff sheet of aluminum would constitute a suitable material, however it is to be understood that the blank 10 might also be of other material as for example, stainless steel or a flexible plastic material. The manner in which the device is mounted upon a cylindrical portion 18 of the furniture which may be an arm supporting member of a chair or upon a similar portion of a chaise lounge, a hammock or the vertical leg of a table as a support for a glass is shown in more detail in FIGURE 6 of the draw- While I have, for the sake of clearness and in order to disclose my invention so that the same can be readily understood, described and illustrated a specific form and arrangement, I desire to have it understood that this invention is not limited to the specific form disclosed, but may be embodied in other ways that will suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art. It is believed that this invention is new and all such changes as come within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered as part of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A detachable article supporting means for tubular garden furniture, comprising a single elongated sheet of material having a major portion rolled to form a substantially complete open ended cylinder and having two spaced extending tongue-like portions rolled in an opposite direction outwardly from said cylinder, a central tongue portion likewise also rolled in a reversed direction and outwardly from said cylinder, said rolled tongue-like portions being disposed in alignment, and an additional tongue-like extension bent inwardly and shaped to form a support within said cylinder for a glass or other article, characterized by the fact that said sheet of material is of sufiicient spring-like material to retain the support in a clamped manner upon a substantially vertically extending tubular portion of the garden furniture when said reversely rolled tongue portions are positioned therearound.
2. A support for use with garden furniture of tubular construction consisting of an elongated sheet of relatively stiff material having its major portion rolled in the form of a substantially complete cylinder, two spaced clip forming tongues ext-ending from one end of said sheet rolled in an opposite direction, a central tongue portion likewise rolled in a reversed direction at the other end of said sheet and disposed in alignment between said two spaced clip forming tongues, and an additional tonguelike extension bent inwardly below said latter tongue and shaped to form a bottom in said cylinder for supporting a glass or other article positioned Within the cylindrical portion of said member, all characterized by the fact that said sheet of material is of suflicient spring-like material to retain said clip forming tongues and said central tongue in clamped engagement upon any substantially vertical tubular portion of the garden furniture.
3. A refreshment supporting device for use with outdoor furniture having vertically extending tubular members, comprising an elongated sheet of material having a substantial portion thereof of uniform width rolled in the form. of a substantially complete open-ended cylinder, a pair of spaced tongue-like extensions at one end of said sheet of material rolled outwardly in an opposite direction with respect to the rolled cylindrical portion of said sheet, a single tongue-like extension at the other end of said sheet also rolled in an opposite direction outwardly from the rolled cylindrical portion and disposed between and in alignment with said two spaced clip-forming tongues, and a third tongue-like extension adjacent said single tongue-like extension bent inwardly and forming a supporting bracket Within the rolled cylindrical portion of said sheet when clamped upon a vertical member of the furniture by said spaced clip-forming tongues and said single tongue-like extension.
